@Ghost&Flower ... Yeah, I know that's why they do it. And that's why I'm complaining ... because this is 2014 and CGI effects are capable of creating most anything realistically = if you spend the time and money. The days of "cutting corners" & hiding CGI in darkened scenes should be a thing of the past, especially with big budget movies like Godzilla, Pacific Rim , etc. Don't get me wrong , I like night time battles. But would it kill them to have one or two great daytime battle scenes as well? And regarding big G's breath weapon .. he does have one in this movie , right?
I'll take night time battles and underwater action like pacific rim over the pure garbage that fills ever transformers movie. They have bright daylight fight scenes and incredible CGI but some of the worst robot and monster designs I've ever seen with horrible fight action as well. You can't even tell who is who or what's going on. At least Pacific Rim had fights with action you could see.
I liked pacific rim too, but I feel like they didnt give the monsters enough screen time to appreciate their designs. I felt the same way about pans labyrinth. They talk about how much time they spend on the design for the creatures in interviews, but then don't show their full potential.
I agree totally with Pacific Rim. Needed way more monster time, even non-battle scenes of the monsters would have been great. Pan's though I see differently. I think they tried not to go all in with the creature scenes just to keep the movie itself intact. It had a story to tell and was really a political message sprinkled with a fairy tale. I think they could have lost some of that if they went full on Jim Henson. The Devil's Backbone was pretty similar in that he did another totally political film but dusted it with a ghost story to get peoples attention. Could have been scarier easily but that wasn't the focus in my opinion.
Sci Fi Japan posted a list showing some of the toys & merch. Spoiler warning if you care - they show a character that Godzilla fights in the movie. Spoiler
Put a paper bag on his head and maybe I'd feel a little better about it.. And the enemy.. Nope, no thanks I already saw Cloverfield
I also get a Cloverfield monster vibe from the foe toys but don't necessarily consider that a bad thing. Enough thought and craft has gone into this production that I suspect the monsters will look better in the actual film.
10 minutes into Monsters and it's looking good! thanks a lot for the recomendation guys! I had previously passed on this..
Here's a nice (if brief) promo for the forthcoming book "Godzilla: The Art of Destruction." As fair warning, there are some potential visual spoilers in the video. Also, it defaults to full volume and begins with Goji's roar, so you might want to turn the level down a bit. Unless you like scaring neighbors and pets. http://www.nerdist.com/2014/04/exclusiv ... h-edwards/
I'm probably going to be flayed alive for saying this, but... ...I've never seen a Godzilla movie. This is going to be my first. If I do enjoy it, I'm going to be asking for recommendations reaaaal soon!
Damn. Do you have netflix? Or actually go download crackle on a pc/mac/laptop/xbox/xboxone/ps3/ps4 and watch a bunch of Godzilla movies for free.
Given that this is a back-to-the-start sort of reboot, you might enjoy comparing it to the 1954 original. There's a not-so-secret theme inherent to both that isn't there in most of the Toho sequels. Just make sure that you see the Japanese version of the original. The USA cut is sort of dumb by comparison. "Hedorah" aka "Godzilla vs. The Smog Monster" is a must-see. Be sure to check out "Destroy All Monsters" and "Godzilla vs. Megalon" as well.
^^^^All that. My friend who's an amateur film maker said he thought it just looked like the 98 version just because it's American. I told him he NEEDS to see the original Japanese version to get where this is going. AKA Big fucking lizard fucking shit up people dying shit's real what the fuck OMG!
