Guess I will be the lone downer here and say I was not at all impressed by the preview. I had such high hopes for this, but from all appearances it looks like every other crap Hollywood film being pumped out these days. Overripe with terrible CGI and the same awful design aesthetic filling up movies like Transformers, Marvel films, alien attack movies, etc. This is Guillermo del Toro for gosh sakes, if anyone is supposed to appreciate the beauty of classic special effects it is him - so what the hell happened here? :( I want to be in love with a movie that harkens back to great storytelling and beautiful looking entertainment; this is not going to be it.

I'll shut up now and go back to watching my rubber suits.

Well, the PR department is hiding the monsters from us (or 'praps they're just not programmed yet) and when was the last time you saw a preview that didn't accent the very worst bits of a movie? That said, it could still be a total piece of crap, but I'm not going to let that little 6 months in advance bit of studio cutting sway me one way or another on the finished product. In fact, I pledge not to have another look at any footage they spit out there until I've plunked down my ticket price and it's too late whatever the outcome.

But duh, rubber suits will always trump anything else!

Not to be a dick, but I don't care who the director is, if it's a mainstream American movie, unless it's a comedy, don't expect rubber suits.

Look at it for what it is, giant robots fighting giant monsters. Let go of any other hang ups and enjoy. Cmon, nerds, let that nerd rage go and just be happy there's ANYTHING even close to this being made by a pretty solid director.

If you were 8 you'd be crapping your pants over this. Be 8 again. Let all the hangs up go.

Poor Golden Gate Bridge ... ever since Harryhausen's six-legged octopus attacked it, it's taken a merciless beating by comets, tidal waves, apes and now kaiju. I can't cross it these days without thinking about "Apes." I think I like the kaiju peril better. :)

The thing about those gawdawful Transformers movies (aside from the WTF racism and puerile sexism) is that the CG were never convincing, especially during the transformations. Unlike the toys that inspired them, you can't see how the 'bots got from one form to another, it was all just an unimpressive CGI blur. Del Toro was pretty intense in insisting that PR's giant robot suits have a reasonable degree of mechanical plausibility. There's not enough in the trailer to see how well that succeeds. Enjoyed the trailer, really excited about the movie.

    ^^^

The original Planet of the Apes series had a big effect on my subconscious and I can't go to a mall without seeing apes.

Looking forward to seeing Idras Elba go international. "Today we are cancelling the apocalypse." Can't that be a new religious quote?!?

Were the robots controlled remotely? That's kind of lame... otherwise looks pretty awesome.

    That speech was terribly cheesy.

I like Del Toro but wasn't really that impressed.

I meh del Toro. But I'll watch this. And I think I'll go into it blind...though not watching the trailer is tough at the moment.

I think this should be cool. Does anyone really care about the acting coming from the human characters in Ultraman episodes or Godzilla movies? I just wanna watch "big things" smash other "big things".

i dont think so- there are teams inside them controlling- note the scene where its running through the ocean and you see the pilots bouncing on like air shoes or something strange.

im really excited for this movie- i could care less about any of the formalities. i love del toro, and i love giant robots smashing big monsters. im excited to see what happens with the final product, it will be entertaining regardless!

Still looks like a bad CGI fuckfest comic book hero movie to me. I'd take that 2010 film Monsters over this. Don't even need to see anymore of the film to tell you exactly how it all plays out:

Monsters attack, they counter with actor/ model types who do aerobics inside giant transformers but have limited success. Some GQ soldier probably dies inspires everyone else, or better yet the badboy rebel makes good, a few over the top speeches followed by a big battle montage all over the world, president makes a speech i.e. George Bush style saying we won, but wait no the forgot one monster on the bottom of the ocean- cue sequel!

I'm convinced they don't make good movies anymore. Really though what has del Toro really done that's even decent? Pan's Labyrinth maybe- that's it!

The Devil's Backbone. That's what I liked of his. Orphanage was good. Pan' was ok. I kind of think of him as I would Neil Gaiman but for film. A clean, normalized version of fantasy and myth. Something for the masses.

The piloting system is a little weird, but I like the mechanical design in this film. Hoping for some good toys!

Also, Charlie Day is in the movie. Can't go wrong with that.

Totally. Reminded me of Aragorn's "but this is not that day" speech in "Return of the King," except ... cheesy.

Hey is anyone seeing some actual kaiju/J-cine influence in the designs? The head of one of tne of the giant exoskeletons reminds me of Tetsujin 28, from what you can see of the monsters I kinda flashed on Neronga for a split second.

I don't want a non-cheesy speech in an action sci-fi film. I hope the piloting system involves break dancing.

Off topic, but I was thinking of upgrading my LotR DVDs to blu-rays. Has anyone done that? Good transfer? Worth it? More bonuses?

If he plays the same character as "It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia", I'm sold. His little dirtbag apartment could be inside the chest cavity of one of those robots.

You have to sniff A LOT of glue to activate the rocket powered face punch.

The first 10 minutes of that were hilarious. But it got old really quick.

I trust Del Toro for his résumé of ambitions monster design. And I trust Idris Elba to become a huge action star. And this is a movie about robots and monsters so Yes.

Also, here's re-edit for Power Rangers fans.

Monsters was really excellent. It's streaming too for those who haven't seen it yet.

I'm looking forward to this movie. I haven't seen a giant monster flick in a while.

I wonder how many robotic influences there are in the movie. The rocket punch is classic. Having a giant turbine in the chest reminds me of something too...drawing a blank though....

And the War of the Monsters PS2 game!!!
