Oh yeah he can be extremely critical. I remember reading about his reaction to his sons film 'Tales from Earthsea' which were pretty crushing given the amount of time and effort it takes to make an animated feature.

    Great video !

Yeah, i remember that. He certainly did'nt spare his sons feelings . . .

To be fair, i read that towards the end of this meeting he softened his comment somewhat. Its just not on this version of the clip.

I have to side with Mr. Miyazaki. It's easy to make something creepy and weird to gain accolades from shock value. It takes creativity and attention to detail, and often, a lot of time and hard work, to create beauty

It's always fun to see one's heroes dish out criticism and stand for their own view in the arts. This video I always fun to watch.

I just found it amusing that he was so brutally, brutally honest. Many people would of just said 'Meh, its not for me',
but he chose to give them both barrels.

They do say 'never meet your heroes' . . . .

@The Moog , actually, I do think he was trying to show some restraint. He seemed truly offended by the young people's lack of awareness of other people's condition, who are facing pain and struggling to just live on a daily basis. I don't even think there was a miniscule amount of "human-ness" in these students. To reach an age of being a young adult and to have lived for so long without being sentient to empathy, comprehension, and the responsibility to help others, was what shocked and inflamed Mr. M. Imagine your Mom and Dad, facing physical and emotional challenges, and to have someone intentionally design something to accentuate a disability to the level of grotesqueness, and on top of that to be so narciscistic, as to attempt to impress others by thinking this is innovative and intelligent. It was pretty shameful, and as he said, we are losing faith in the human condition.
