You’re making the assumption folks are collecting toys purely for the same reasons they did as when they were 6 years old...while subconciously this may still be true, it’s certainly not the case with many adult collectors and definitely not the case with the giant pissing contest that is collecting HxS these days.

Collecting toys for me, as anything in life, is not that simplistic-the reasons I have some toys in my collection range from sheer nostalgia and childhood joy, to enjoying something partially because it is rare, which is not some awful thing I am going to feel guilty about just because a handful of collectors on a toy board tell me so. Is enjoying a rare piece of vintage sofubi or a one off by your favorite maker a fucking crime? Also the reasons why you may own a toy are not mutually exclusive, it could be all of the above.

Enjoying rarity IS part of human nature, but making rarity and exclusivity the only reason you collect is lame and certainly degrades many of the greatest joys of toy collecting.

I’m not making excuses for human nature...human nature at its core is 50% garbage. That’s why I chose to hang out in the woods for my career. But trying to tell me everyone should have the exact same feelings about sofubi as playdough is ridiculous.

So when is Hirota going to pull a Banksy and torch an auctioned toy right as the hammer falls?

The guts are absolutely rad, I hope to at least see one in hand. Also, I'm very curious about the photo book that was at the event, I'm sure it has some rad shots in it!

So much amazing stuff. While the one offs are cool, I think I like some of micro run figures better. The Brutal-A with guts, return of Gorilla Ju and mini MG2 are probably my favorites.

The two headed monster with the alien omake is also pretty rad. Was that for sale, or just on display?

I get what you mean, but still find it hilarious that people would consider IG and posting prayer hand emojis "social" media, as opposed to a message board where you can actually converse with people.

    Very nice event.
The set of OG GJs are the best in show to me.
The mini MG2s are also way cool.
Prices are exorbitant even at retail but are still snapped up instantly.
Probably because secondary prices expectation are even much higher.
Amazing how much hot sofubi fund HxS is able to attract right now.
    Congratulations to him !

It's a dangerous game.. raising the retail price so much might seem like a good idea but it's a solid way to exhaust your fanbase's interest and $$$. What will happen when interest in HxS and sofubi in general crashes? He can't lower his retail prices back to what they once were - that would be a slap in the face to people who paid current retail.

In all honesty, if I made toys...I would have constant shows in China. Literally non-stop. There has been a huge shift in the last 5 years, and people are paying insane prices. I've owned 4 hxs toys and sold them at retail to good folks on skullbrain. The sad reality is that at this current going rate...I could have made $3000. That is fucking insane. The current bubble is so ludicrous. I don't ever regret my sales but it makes me wonder.

So I’m going to go off on a rant here for a second...
I have a lot of opinions on the state of sofubi in the current day I feel like there are for sure some culprits for how and why we got to this point and I honestly do try not to bring negative energy to this board. All of that said I want to say that things are reaching a boiling point and people are getting burned out. I’ve had multiple people tell me they are done collecting because of how money hungry and toxic this scene has become. I enjoy collecting HxS I have only ever won one lotto so all of my pieces were either traded for or I paid over retail for. I didn’t do it because they are hype or rare I did it because I appreciate the aesthetic of the toys I like simple playful look and chunky feel of the sculpts. That said it is being made very clear these toys aren’t made for people that can’t rationalize spending a months pay (or more) on a single one off and that makes me sad. I have some rare toys yes and I enjoy them for there rarity in some cases there colors in others and the event at which they were obtained for others. That said I also have a huge Imaginext collection (as Shadow4437 can validate or my IG from time to time) why? Because I like toys! I don’t really care about hype I just like what I like and I enjoy occasionally shutting up the leeches on IG with there sell to me attitude of entitlement even though most of them started collecting in 2016. I’m not going anywhere but I for sure will be more selective about what artists need my “support”

What were prices like? HxS prices on runs were always super reasonable up until the mad toyz collab, then they quadrupled overnight.

I assume the prices are HK.
    8000 HK = $1021 US
    4800 HK = $612 US
    3200 HK = $408 US
    1800 HK = $229 US
