RE Under the Shadow, can't say I'd give it a rousing recommendation. Not a whole hell of a lot happens and it's hardly scary. I think I'd call it Babadook-light. It might be of interest for the time and place in which it happens, but as a horror movie it doesn't offer much.

I know it's been spoken of but I watched The Autopsy of Jane Doe last night without knowing anything about it. Absolutely enjoyable.

I think the most interesting part of the film was the setting and time frame. The fear of real world circumstances, not being able to even run down the street away from evil because you aren't properly covered up so you can get whipped for it. I enjoyed it but there is always a difficulty when you don't really like the main character. She wasn't a great mom or wife or person but she was a great actress for sure. Interesting that they made the film with no "hero" so to speak. Like you said, not very scary but I am glad I finally saw it and for free on netflix.

I've seen mostly garbage the last few months.

Only really great one recently was The Monster that I mentioned earlier. Great old school trapped in the woods with an actual monster flick. Lots of fun and a little emotional too.

The asian flick that put the ghost from the ring against the ghost from the grudge was really fun too. Pretty silly but the horror was done really well and I had a blast with it all the way through.

Someone here mentioned The Wailing that is on netflix. That is next on my list. A friend told me it had something ridiculous like 99% on rotten tomatoes today with a good amount of reviews.

EDIT - And like saintofspinners just mention The Autopsy Of Jane Doe was really neat. So much atmosphere and slow burn creepiness in that one.

The only movie I've heard that is semi decent is called The Witch and I'll probably just rent that and check out the Autopsy. Thanks for that.

The Wailing was good. Lots of humor in it, which I guess has put off some folks, but I didn't mind it. It's a tad long, but it had some good scares, good gore and likeable (but flawed) characters.

The Monster was decent. I don't think I liked it quite as much as Waterbear, but it just hit Prime within the last day or two so it was worth a free viewing. I liked the actress who played the little girl a lot. And I think they did a good job of mostly avoiding the "bad decision" trope of horror movies. Plus the monster isn't CGI, which is always a plus.

I wasn't all that impressed with The Witch, but it's also free on Prime right now and definitely worth a watch.

Tales of Halloween finally made it to Netflix and it's worth a watch. There are 10 stories so you don't have to suffer through any bad/boring ones for too long before a new one starts. Some good cameos from familiar faces too.

I just watched the remake of Cabin Fever. Nothing really to add about it. It's as pointless as you'd expect, but it's not a bad movie. It's got less humor than the original, though, so you're just left thinking, "Why?"

Cooties is mindless fun. Too much CGI blood and gore, but hey, kids kill and get killed which makes for good horror.

Wake Wood is a decent little British flick from Hammer Studios. Kind of a cross between Pet Sematary and The Wicker Man. It's shot on digital, and uses CGI blood.

I may have posted this trailer in here before, but I re-watched the movie today and it reminded me of how utterly terrified I was of this commercial back in 1978. Funny thing is, although pretty creepy and a good movie overall, it's nowhere near as frightening as this commercial was(is).

Just finished watching SPLIT and wow. I hate pretty much all of Sham's movies but this one, I can't even fathom. It is impossible to even try and discuss this film without a HUGE spoiler so if you don't want the movie ruined do not click that spoiler tag. I have to admit is was an incredibly bold move that people will either love or really hate. I don't recall anyone ever doing it before. Not like this anyway.

No, seriously. Do not click if you care about destroying the entire surprise.

It was a direct sequel to UNBREAKABLE and you don't find out until the last 5 seconds when some random person in a diner compares the bad guy they are talking about on the news to "the guy in the wheelchair" and Bruce Willis says "oh yeah that was Mr. Glass" so this entire film was another one of his superhero films but rather than market it as a sequel he turned the fact that it's a sequel into the twist. Fuck.

I'd heard about the "twist" in Split, and it actually has me really intrigued. I like M. Night for the most part, and am glad to see him coming back to form.

Anyway, if any of you STILL don't have a Shudder account, I gotta say, you need to get one. So many great movies are available and new ones are added weekly. Of course I made the mistake of watching 31 when it became available, but that's my fault, not theirs. :)

Netflix has been getting some decent recent releases in, too. Just watched I Am Not a Serial Killer and enjoyed it. It has an interesting premise, and Christoper Lloyd does a good job. I think it was shot on 16mm film, and I liked the music and overall feel of the film.

Agree, Shudder is the best pay service for horror fans.

And to piggy back off of what @Lttr Prssd said, in "I am not a serial killer", Christopher Lloyd gives his best performance in years.

I remember We Need to Talk About Kevin was mentioned here before, not in the traditional horror sense, but the premise being so realistic and anxiety-inducing to think about.

Well, if you did see it and found it intriguing, a true crime show called "Evil Lives Here" just aired its season premiere on Investigation Discovery a few weeks ago. I tend to leave the channel on and passively listen to it like a radio as I paint, but this first episode had my full attention. The entire show is narrated by a relative of whom the episode is about. It's raw and emotional.
The first episode of the new season though... it mirrored "Kevin" so much that it was scary. Real life horror right there, knowing that yes, this can actually happen.

I don't want to spoil either the movie or the episode, but if you have cable the first episode is probably on demand.

    If you do want spoilers...
The episode is narrated by the mother and father of a prolific arsonist who actually did end up indirectly killing people through the fires. They described his strange behavior growing up, how he enjoyed hurting others and almost drowned his little sister in their pool... at this point I was really getting spooked thinking how similar this was to the movie. His parents just couldn't get through to him, but the father (go figure, just like the movie) had faith that he was heading on the right path once he picked up the hobby of fire scene photography. When an arsonist began his reign of terror in the area, there were suspicions, but never any accusations until they saw a composite sketch in a newspaper, prayed, and knew they both had to report their son. They insist they love him despite his evilness (just like the movie, how Kevin's mom can't let go of her son despite all he's done) and struggled with what they called the "ultimate betrayal" of cooperating with police to catch him. Even then, the parents lost everything... their clients, their business, then their home. They didn't understand why they were being punished for doing the right thing. (Sound familiar?) If you're the sensitive type, you will be at least sniffling by the end of the episode, mark my words. Really an emotional roller coaster seeing a real-life version of this movie.

Speaking of Shudder, they are doing a free trial and it seems like they upped their list of movies over the past few months so that may be something to check out on the cheap.

It has definitely expanded, and as i already mentioned, new stuff shows up weekly. Also, it seems like it's matching up better on Amazon, which is actually how I watch my Shudder shows. There are some goofy glitches still, were a movie is mislabeled (the original Maniac and Deep Red are two examples I discovered) on Amazon, but it's gotten a lot better. I bought a Fire TV stick so I can access my movies more easily, and it's pretty awesome.

    Danny Perez's Antibirth.

Been fixated on this one since I saw it last year and just discovered a few days ago that it's now streaming on Netflix. 85% of you will hate me for recommending this once you've had a look, heh. Don't watch the trailer first if you can help yourself.

@michael - We felt a little differently from one another on this one, huh? Rather than a wall-to-wall gross-out, Anitibirth was gross in tone, with a slow, comedically trashy build that paid off spectacularly in its closing moments. Rather than feeling like a music video, it was more a visually layered B picture, with handmade flourishes - achieved on a dime - throughout. Struck me as personal, satirical, ambitious and artful. It was no Street Trash, but it wasn't trying to be. Also, the music that it was videoed to ruled, ha!

The ladies were great in it, too.

Septic Man was fine. Give me Hell Baby or Bad Milo over it any day, though... smiley face

i agree wholeheartedly, and did enjoy watching it, it just wasnt what i was expecting having read reviews prior (probably shouldnt have)

hell baby and bad milo are both top notch, and street trash will always hold a special place in my heart- even got to see a film transfer of it a couple years ago in an empty theater

^ Yeah, going in blind is the best way to go with this one.

Caught Street Trash in a packed house probably around the same time. It was the middle flick between Singapore Sling: The Man Who Loved a Corpse and some '80s oversize-mouth-and-tentacle-monster-eats-a-family-in-their-house jobbie that I can't remember the title of. Sound familiar, anyone?

^ It does sound a lot like TerrorVision, doesn't it? Wish it had been, I'd love to see that on a big, fat screen! Nope, something even lower rent... it'll come to me.

Found a nice transfer of the superior film, lickity-split:

See it with someone you love!
