Not sure where to put this, as it is kind of related to SB, but only in a vague orbital way... so I'll put it here. Balzac and The Misfits both have significant numbers associated with them. Now recently, I found the old horror/sci-fi movie Atom Age Vampire, which explains that Balzac phrase, but I'm still not sure I get the "308" reference. Anyone have any answers on that? And for that matter, what is the significance of "138" to The Misfits? They have a song, "We are 138". Any help with these numbers would be greatly appreciated.
isn't the 138 from the film THX138 by george lucas? Here you go: Based on George Lucas's 1971 science fiction film "THX-1138," this song reflects the anonymity attached to living with a number for a name in a 25th century police state. On July 1, 1996 Bobby Steele e-mailed the following to the Misfits Bible: "We used to have badges with a picture of a robot with 138 on his forehead. I wonder if Jerry has one, or remembers it... He [Glenn] used to tell us that if someone asked what it meant, we should just laugh, and in a mocking tone say "What? You don't know?" and sound real snobby when you say it. Make them feel like every idiot but YOU knows what it means." Jerry Only told a similar story to a fan after a show on July 27, 1996: "'138' is like people being treated as androids where you have a number instead of a name, so it's like the human number would be a 138... We had buttons made once, they were robots with '138' that looked like half human android kinda things, long before your Terminator or stuff like that." Glenn Danzig summarized it in a Twec.Com interview on January 27, 2000: "They didn't write it, and they don't know what the fuck it's about. It's about violence."
Yes, "138" is a veiled reference to the movie THX 1138. Remember, Glenn doesn't like to talk about the Misfits. In a recent interview I did with Hirosuke, he said he got 308 from a horror movie but would not tell me the name of the movie...
Oh, so that's it. I should've known that. I fear my geek cred may be in jeopardy. It's been a looooooooooooooong time since seeing THX-1138 for me... sounds like I should give it another view. Pardon the ignorance of punk politics, but I take it there is bad blood between Mr. Danzig and Mr. Only? I'm riding high right now on a tide of fresh re-discovery, as my interest in Balzac has gotten me back into Misfits music after a long absence. Bought one of the more recent ones, Famous Monsters, the other day, and it's one of the best damn CDs I've bought in a while, IMHO. I also dug up some older stuff and found the "138" song, and made the Balzac connection with the "308", hence the question. Thanks for the help, brothers. So 308 is from a horror movie, but we don't know what? hmmmm... wonder if it is Japanese, European, American, other? There's a neat little Japanese horror short about bad things happening when a mobile shows all 4s... since Japanese for "four" is shi, which is the same sound as the word/character for "death". Just thought I'd share that numerological tidbit... Well, time to research 308, I suppose...
>Pardon the ignorance of punk politics, but I take it there is bad blood >between Mr. Danzig and Mr. Only? Yes.
Glen and Peter Steele ahd a fued years ago also..I wonder if theres any bad blood there because they are both masters IMO!!!!
speaking of danzig feuds, did anyone ever hear about a feud between him and def lepard? i don't know if it is just legend...
I've got tons of Danzig stories. I use to live in Los Angeles and see him all the time- grocery store, at shows where he was in the audience, etc. He lived in this creepy old house with this one big creepy tree growing right next to the house and a big black metal fence enclosing the property. His house was on the way to my friend's and I would drive by all the time. Some days, Danzig would be squatting on the sidewalk, holding his cat, and just staring out at the world all spooky-like. He also had a black porsche that never seemed to leave the driveway. At night, there would only be 1 light on in the house, very, very faint. Somebody once put a short video clip on the internet of them jumping the fence and throwing shit on his sidewalk (or something like that). Anybody seen it?
You know, it's funny, because the guy who recorded my band last summer lived near him too and he said the same thing... also something about a big pile of dirt in the driveway?
Here's a link with a picture of MR T in front of Danzig's house: http://www.losanjealous.com/2006/02/02/ ... ted-house/
all I have to say about this thread is: whoooooooooooooooooooaaaaaaa ohhhhhhhhhhhhh oh.....WHOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAA OHHHHHHHHHHHHH OHHHHHH!!!
You guys are right about the 138 and 308 is a room number from a book or a movie. Hirosuke mentioned both in the past. There is no bad blood between Balzac and Danzig. Chris from horrorwood saw a picture of them together and that they got along.
Hey guys, I live in Jersey. In fact I'm in Lodi right now, the birthplace of the Misfits, and the armpit of Bergen County. LOL! Growing up, we always heard that 138 was the address of the place where they used to practice. I'd be curious to know the actual answer. My freshman year in college I was so psyched because my dorm room was #138.
Wow... all of this is really good stuff... thanks, everyone. Could it be that Danzig is too horrific for The Misfits? Sounds like that Aqua Teen ep about the elf blood may not have been too far from the mark... Hah! Danzig in a grocery store... something about that screams "comedy gold" to me... ever witness him snap or have a bit of a "psychobilly freakout" or something, Chad?
Of course, I have seen Danzig lose it. One night, I was at a LA club called Helter Skelter. Danzig was there so I asked him about some recent Danzig 7-inches that I suspected were bootlegs. Danzig hates bootlegs and confirmed my suspicions. However, somebody I was with LOVED bootlegs. He got in Danzig's face immediately and started talking bullshit about how bootlegs were cool. Danzig growled, shoved the guy, and walked away all huffy. The grocery store experience was funnier. It was early in the morning. Danzig was with a girl (who I'd bet was a stripper about half his age and his date from the night before) and they were in the pet food isle. They were buying a huge bag of cat food. I came around the corner and made eye concact with Glenn. He bowed up and growled at me with a look that said "I know you know who I am but don't talk to me". I just started laughing and walked off... I don't know why but I seem to always see Rock Stars at the Grocery Store. Another time, around 1996-97, I saw Trent Reznor at the grocery store in New Orleans. He was with a skank stripper and they were trying to buy red beans and rice. Reznor made eye contact with me and gave me a wide grin. I started laughing and kept walking...
i've been laughing for 5 minutes about this one... "we got to go out.." "are you gonna take me for breakfast in your black porsche?" "no, fluffy..uh I mean, Asmodeus needs some food." "Can we at least take the Porsche?" "um no, it's just cardboard, i bought it from the same place that makes fake tv's and computers for Ikea displays."
Dude, your nuts. The RFSO players should act this melodrama out. I'll play Fluffy...er..Asmodeus. I've run into Glen in NJ too, usually at comic shops or toy shows. He is a gruff SOB, not a "people person". Or maybe my friends and I were just annoying little skate punks.
Perhaps he has a very intense, black aura or something... ... or was he wearing his cloak of fear +2 at the time? Great stories... I suppose you are lucky that growl is all he did, ne? I mean, what if you were at the meat counter? Asmodeus... hah! Remember... there is no black Porsche. ^_^ hmmm... holding the cat and grimacing menacingly at the world reminds me of what one of my high school friends used to say: "Cats -- nature's hand grenades. Take one in hands, shake, then toss at your enemy. Hijinks ensue." All in good fun, mind you. I'm sure Mr. Danzig was just grooming Asmodeus to do his evil evil bidding by night. ^_^
