I remember being sent to the principals office during junior high for fighting. A fellow comic book aficionado and I where having a discussion about who was the best comic book artist of all time and when I brought up Jack Kirby the young gentleman leveled insults at him and it was go time. talk about geeky juvenile delinquents. Hail King Kirby!
I just read this article about some newly released and recoloured Kirby art that is coming out soon, with some preview prints available at SDCC. You can see some of his amazing otherworldly interpretations for the [now unfortunately famous] film, Argo (based on Lord of Light). You can see the Heavy Metal connection there in the psychedelia, and the crazy space-Hinduism of the designs, but there is no question in seeing them that it is undoubtebly classic Kirby. In everything he did, the man was a geniius at the craft. I am not sure the over-the-top colour schemes they have used compliment his work so much, which is unfortunate in these cases, and it comes off as more distracting I find, but I always still like looking at Kirby art. Personally, I think these need the traditional four colour printing and pairing with some of his excellent inking partners and they would stand out that much more. A few examples: A few more, and the full article available here.
That Kamandi artist Edition came out last week. I know Royer inked a good deal of that and I remember always loving his work with Jack.
The black light Kirby prints that will be at SDCC are $200+ Does anyone know why they are so expensive?
Anyone in the California area has a great chance to check out the show Comic Book Apocalypse: The Graphic World of Jack Kirby, currently on at the CSUN/Mike Curb College of Arts, Media and Communication main gallery. Show info is here, and runs until October. There is a special curator presentation coming up by Charles Hatfield, as well as open discussion forum later on. Don't miss it if you have the opportunity. More detailed information on the exhibit itself can be gleaned from the link below: http://www.comicsreporter.com/index.php ... hatfield1/
Beautiful edition of Kirby's Mighty Thor, released as an "artist's edition" in glorious 15 x 22" HC from IDW: Pricey, but oh so lovely. Gorgeous large size Kirby in proof B&W; 160 pages as he was meant to be appreciated. Link for purchasing/more info
Wanted to share some appreciation of the master's work from a vintage reprint I picked up the other day, rescued from a 10p comic bin. [Please forgive the shitty pics, they really don't do him justice] Classic Kirby artwork from Fantastic Four #7 Tales of Suspense #41 The Incredible Hulk #4 Spoiler: Bonus for Ditko fans Strange Tales #111 Not much (if anything) beats Silver Age treasures.
Holy crap, Kirby drew McGoohan! Guess I'm late in discovering this late discovery, but news of the abandoned adaptation of The Prisoner has my mind reeling! An excellent little article about it, by Charles Hatfield, can be found here, and scans of the work-in-progress pages can be seen over at Forces of Geek, bless their click-hungry hearts. You said it, Pat! Sweet merciful Damn.
I was super annoyed that google didn't change the search engine logo for his 100th. If they do it for Stan Lee I'm going to spit on an employee if I ever cross paths with one #hailtheking
I'm getting all those 1$ True Beleiver comics reprint Marvel are putting out in august for Kirby's 100th. So far they were all great fun. I picked just one from the DC's $5 tributes, Manhunter, cuz there was a Demon story in it. http://downthetubes.net/?p=38241 I'm aslo following the Kamandi Chalange This serie is more miss than hit though.
Didn't know these were happening, so many thanks for mentioning them! I immediately called the comic shop nearest me to inquire, and was told, "Yeah... books like that, reprints, they just tend to be shelf-warmers." Second place? Hadn't even heard of them! Not sure which call was more depressing. Mail order it is, I guess - South Side in PA has my back.
LMAO The place i buy comics from is more respectful than the ones you called. Its actually the opposite for me. They sell like hot cakes. I was lucky enough to get a Captain America one as well as a Black Panther issue done by him. Both are fantastic comics.
Happy 100th to the lord of lines! There was a great deal I wanted to share for occasion, but life's keeping me away from SB largely these days. Just popping in to say how thrilled I am to see any JK products and acknowledgements these days, even if it is less than would be ideal. Those True Believer reprints are just the ideal filler for missing classics in my life. If anyone knows a good (and affordable ) source where I can grab the entire bunch of them, do let me know. I need more Jack, and this is such a great way to add superb comics - not to mention enjoy reading them again - so at least that is something truly smile-worthy. Hail to the king! Thank you so much for all of the joy, creations, and memories, Jack.
A dollar well spent!* Kirby 'n Lee with a sidecar of Ditko. I should leave the house more often. *That's a fib, actually - the real total was $2.12. I just wanted you guys to think I was cool.
Ooooh, lovely finds Herr Devo. I have got some green pigment coming forth to my epidermal layer, yet feel strangely not in the mood (any more than normal) for smashing things. Definitely had a worthwhile outing there! Congratulations.
The comic shop I go to had a big sale on Kirby stuff. I got a cool book with his biography and a bunch of cool drawings. Happy 100th bday!
To say I've been on a Kirby kick lately would be an understatement. The King has never really been far from my thoughts, but since my stumbling on those pages from his never-to-be Prisoner comic a couple of months ago, my re-immersion has been growing steady. Sadly, much of the material I've been poring over has been of the digitized variety - net being what it is, easy access to reprints -- and ton(nes) of his work as originally published -- is out there, but I lack the funds to do much about that - but how fantastic is it that such a range of his epic output is literally just a couple of clicks away from being right in front of your eyes? Thought I'd share a few stand-alone images that I added to the overworked HDD today ---- Here be quality scans of all of the color plates from the aughts re-issue of the rightly famed 1971 portfolio, KIRBY UNLEASHED: Spoiler: GIANT BEAUTY FIGHTING AMERICAN: JACK KIRBY'S GODS - Sigurd: JACK KIRBY'S GODS - Balduur: JACK KIRBY'S GODS - Heimdall: JACK KIRBY'S GODS - Honir: MAN-MACHINE-MERGER: GOD: TRIBES TRILOGY no.2: DREAM MACHINE: THE FOREVER PEOPLE:
