Kaiju, robuts, slime monsters, and invaders from the great beyond - Celebrating the B-movie
I thought I had created a thread here previously, focused on appreciate of classic kaiju, B-movie, midnight monster, pulp sci-fi, and all the wonderful schlock that goes along with it, but can't seem to find it, so it is time to rectify that. I know there are a number of other dedicated buffs on here who love overindulging on these as much as I. Kicking it off with an apt post, I think.

I know people are probably all set with the recent release of Godzilla - The Showa-Era Films Collection from Criterion, and if you are in the US and have access to the B&N or Amazon sale, why wouldn't you be taking this opportunity??!!! I would really suggest supporting purchasing hard copies of these films as you can, because it in the end supports efforts to make these available (many of which were never in this format), and encourages producers to keep on catering to us fans. I know getting physical discs seems like such an outmoded, archaic concept to many folks, but in fact it is the only way [currently] to express thanks for delivering something the fanbase has asked for and for all the work that has gone into them.

With that being said, however, I recently discovered quite a trove of online 'hosted' content which may also be of interest to some others here. The amazing archivist Gorizard1 has been hard at work preserving and uploading HD versions of some excellent kaiju films (alongside some toku shows) to archive.org. I won't provide links to the full list, as I am sure people here are more than competent to undertake their own browsing, but as of this post (and mu cursory efforts), the library includes the following titles:

NB: I have not listed the individual specs here, but many of these are available in HD versions, ripped from original JP source blurays, and in the original Japanese language (w/ English subtitles, where appropriate). Again, this alone is something special to actually get access to. For those into that sort of thing (no judgement), international/dubbed versions are also included.

Gotta bump this post. I bought the Criterion set, but there are so many great Kaiju movies that didn’t make the cut. Being able to experience these films for the first time, thanks to these archives, has been great.

Just learned of a new release from the folks at Arrow video which might interest some others on here. Similar to what Criterion did with the Showa-era Goji films, Arrow is now releasing the complete series of Gamera films in a comprehensive, high-def and uncut versions, including 4k restorations of the Heisei trilogy [often considered the pinnacle of the series, and an incredible example of a 'reboot']. A complete 12 discs gives you all the Gamera fun you could ask for.

A brief breakdown of the set, as provided by BloodyDisgusting (Arrow has little information on their own site, unfortunately):

While I am generally more for the classic films, I got to say this is pretty cool news, and the movies themselves are of course very enjoyable. The set will be released in both the UK (27 July 2020) and US (28 July 2020), and is up available for pre-order now from various outlets, or Arrow directly.
