Not sure about those Pushead Damns.
The patterns, especially the one on the left look like some retro pattern from an upscale women's fashion clothing store.

    edit: "left"

If they weren't Pushead, would people actually be saying they're good? I'm not trying to be snarky, I really mean it. To my eye, they're truly ugly and amateur-ish looking, not to mention ... hand-painted plush? Hm.

I look at them and just think that my parents living room in the 70's threw up on these...

Not a big fan of the two Damns.
But there's going to be quite a bit more I bet.

Sometimes I get really cynical about all of the hype and the scene.

Where else can an unpainted GID figure be worth more than the same GID figure painted by an artist?
Or a "handpainted" figure, consisting of dribbles of paint, have an expensive price tag versus a tight production piece?

Completely agree with you Dean and liquid. I think the name sells more than the item. Frankly it's something that really turned me off from "Western" stuff (get it, "Frank"ly!). I've been getting that feeling with a lot of the "hand paints" or "customs" that have been selling around these parts lately...and I'm not talking about the hobbyist board members, but some of the "established" people.

Totally am with you guys on that point. I will say however that the Pushead HP pieces I've seen in person (especially the pirate and KvP) are far more impressive and intricate than they look in photos.

I like some of his hand-paints - but I'd argue that the end product of a lot of them is at least partially due to gravity and chance rather than artistic talent. I mean, anyone could create some of them...it just happens to be done by Pushead.

YEah...these are pretty awesome. As a lover of MUSCLE, Army guys, and, of course, Zombies, I have to admit that i'll probably be picking up at least one package of these dudes.

looking at those damns i would not have guessed they were pushead, in fact i did a double-take when i read they were. i do not like the one on the right at all, tho i see a little more of an artistic touch to the one on the left. i do think some of the hype on SOME of the HP's is silly but usually they do kick major ass.

Nate, do you own a Pushead handpaint?

I'm not sure you would write this if you did. Many would like to copy the style, but I imagine it would be incredibly difficult to achieve. I'm not talking about the factory "handpaints", but like an HP KvP for example done by Pushead himself.

I think NT is referring more to the hiddy/pus style drip painting where gravity dictates where the paint falls and not the artist. I have seen some amazing work by pus, also seen some great work by hiddy but there is always another side to that coin.

there aint no carrot at the end of this rabbit hole.

more goes into the hp plush stuff than you might know. flocked artwork really consists of putting layers of glue, followed by a microthin layer of millions of loose synthetic fibers then more glue, then more fibers, repeat until you get a good coating....it's very hard to get a consistent and even coating of flocking on and takes lots of practice.

so, where you see each color on the pushead pieces, is a different application of glue and fibers, which has to dry thouroughly before you can put another color on. i'm sure they took some time to put together. this is why you normally only see flocked toys in one color. to do more colors takes twice the amount of time and to do three, evenn more so.

...or he put it thru the flocking machine readily available to schools and professionals for a few hundred dollars then painted it w/ regular paint. not really sure how pushead does it but I highly doubt he puts actual different colored flocking to create the different colors. maybe Im way off on this too. I have a great respect and admiration for pus' work.

Im pretty sure its done by a machine, Ive done some flocking but the hand glue things is not really an option for something of that scale and it would not even come out close to professional.

Yeah, I would bet dollars to donuts that they're just white flocked damns that Pushead then paints.
And Kirkland - I don't own a Pushead hand paint. Mind you, I DO like a good portion of his drippy KvP paints, would love to own one, I just question how much artistic effort goes into them. On the other hand, you can tell a lot of time was spent on those two Damns, and the one on the right looks horrible compared to the drippy style he does...so effort doesn't necessarily equal good. I'd rather have something that looked good and was achieved simply than something that looks bad but was achieved with great effort. But I don't like feeling ripped off either - if something took someone 20 minutes to create I'm not gonna spend big bucks on it.

How is painting on a flocked surface? Does the paint want to bleed out, or does it stay pretty much where you put it? Unfortunately, I've never seen one of the HP flockeds up close and personal, but that Dam on the left looks quite intricate and I happen to like the loose vine/snake/crazy aunt's wallpaper look of the one on the right...

Those GID Zombies ain't bad either!

Sorry, Jeff! But lookit that - he actually painted the bandages separately rather than just "letting paint dribble down it"! (And did I mention I generally like the KvPs despite my comments?) :D

even the idea of owning a KvP handpaint makes my tummy go a bit bubbly. I just don't think I could koff up the 5-6-7-8 hundreds of dollars for one...assuming that I make it through the gauntlet/lottery etc.

But boy o boy is that a beauty pic.

well anyways... i'm almost certain that he masks all of his handpaints and if it doesn't look like it's masked, it's probably a "hand spray painted" which costs significantly less. you don't have to like everything he does... but i find it odd for someone to question his artistic effort (does that term even make sense? )
