Sad news, Ray Stevenson has died after being hospitalised with a 'sudden illness' whilst filming in Italy, four days before his birthday. He was 58.

I will remember him most fondly as the stand-out role in the TV show 'ROME' as 'Titus Pullo'. He was also very good as the pirate 'Blackbeard' in the TV show 'Black Sails'. I didn't know he was born in Lisburn, Northern Ireland. I lived there for a few years, so i'm familiar with the place.

    R.I.P Ray.

Sad news to hear of his passing indeed. Such a good character actor, and one who honestly appeared to throw everything into every role he took on, no matter how small. Both those roles you called out are so memorable, Rome especially is one of those shows you never forget seeing, and he was a huge part of that. While I have not seen it, I have heard his performance in RRR was also fantastic, and likely a major lead to getting him an upcoming role in the SW universe via Ashoka:

I have to call out his wonderfully joyous performances as Volstagg in the Thor films; he was a good part of the heart of those movies. I know his role as Frank Castle is a fan-favourite among many. I oddly have not seen it mentioned elsewhere, so also have to shoutout for the delightful low-budget romp that was Outpost. One of those actors who was always a pleasure to see show up in something, and was always enjoyable to light up the screen with emotion and bravado. I think he was happy for the work as it seemed he really enjoyed it. Tough to see his early passing and will miss the future career he would have had. RIP.

Ray actually is a very important person in my life although totally unintentionally.

My wife Lena and I used to work at a local comic shop and Ray came out and did a signing at the shop. He was the nicest dude and just super fun to talk to and down to earth. But he also brought his homie with him that was a special fx artist and that guy ended up talking to Lena and basically talking her into getting into film.
So if not for Ray then Lena would never have taken the steps to becoming the costume supervisor she is today. Which means I would have probably never become an Art Coordinator.
So thanks for changing my life Ray.
    Rest in Power.
