@JoeBunny: more vegan/veggie suggestions plz

Ike's is at the top of my list of places I missed last time, and Golden Era is the only place I absolutely have to return to.

    -Whiz burger ,uses wildwood patties
-Burma superstar has a ton of options
-Yum Yum house, Cantonese with non sketchy mock meats
-St Francis fountain for veggie/vegan meals and Vegan Milkshakes,
-Herbivore and Millennium are always worth trying at least once. Although Millennium is expensive. Noteworthy is that head chef is not Vegan but makes what most people consider the one of the best Vegan meal, although again overpriced. Herbivore is moderately priced and worth trying.
    -Maggie Mudds Vegan Ice cream
    -Indian Oven
-Jay's cheesesteaks have a wide variety of seitan sandwiches alone with other Vegan cheesesteaks
    -Chay-ya Vegan/vegatarian sushi.
-Love & Hate for late night mock duck sandwiches.
-Whats up dog(many locations around the city) has Vegans dogs.
-Souley Vegan in oakland. Much like the Soul Veg chain on the east coast.
-Fellinis in berkeley has what's considered the best(only) Vegan brunch in the area. everybody raves about it.

As for vegetarian SF is probably the most veggie friendly city i've ever been in.

X- Barneys has been discovered to not have anything vegetarian, even the fries. Confirmed by the staff.
X- lets be frank uses field roast dogs but the Buns are not vegan.

IMHO the burritos at Taqueria Vallerta on 24th are better than Cancun's. They don't have Cancun's excellent jukebox, though. Taqueria fare tastes better when you can hear Vicente Fernandez or Lola Beltrán wailing away about lost love and the comforts of the bottle. Also I don't think Vallerta does veggie burritos, so if it's about that, I have to defer.

Also in my experience the Cancun way up Mission towards the Excelsior is better than the original location, and the one on Market is to be avoided entirely. :)

I've heard the same about the one on Market. I've never gone there but everyone that I've talked to says to avoid it.

Skip what's up dog or at least skip the one in the financial district. Saw some shady shit at that one. Go to Underdog (inner sunset) instead.
    Zante's - indian pizza
Weird Fish- Buffalo Girls (hot wings) Fish & Chips are the best thing on the menu. Both made from seitan.

There's a lot of more good shit missing from this & Alex's list, but I'm lazy, so here's a link of a ton of places in the city for vegan eats. It's yelp, so you have to wade through a bunch of shitheads & wanna-be comedians.
    Vegan Yelp Search

And Dean, totally agree about the Cancun up mission. It's definitely the better one of all locations.

yeah dude. same one. killer pizza!

Weird fish changed some shit w/ their pancakes & now they're total shit! Sucks too since they use to be awesome. Flat and shitty. I thought it was a one time deal when I went w/ scott, but I went back there again and it was the same thing.

Damn, the line at Ike's is ridiculous.
Phone order is even worse at two and half hours.

For reals. Waited about an hour today.

    Halfway through the line.

    Some popular choices.
My personal favorite is the Menage a Trois on Dutch Crunch.
Thanks to Alex on that recommendation.

Got to love the Dirty Sauce.

We ordered a few sandwiches today.
    Buddy tried the Kryptonite.
It was about 4 pounds of food according to Ike.

    200. Kryptonite (Roast Beef, Pastrami, Salami, Turkey, Bacon, Ham, Mozzarella Sticks, Stuffed Jalapeno Poppers, Beer Battered Onion Rings, Pesto, Avacado, EXTRA Pepper Jack)

Joe. Stupendous choice. You are a man who knows how to eat!

Would also suggest the napolean complex.

Ok so today I got to eat at Hubert Kellers new SF burger bar. Although the reviews have been luke warm I loved it. I built my own with the Kobe, onion, baby spinach, cheddar and foie gras. Ok so no foie gras this time but Im going for it next time. Highlights of what you can add on:
    -foie gras
    -a grilled half lobster
    -black truffles
    -red wine & shallots reduction
    -fried egg

So the decor is pretty much bullshit. I don't know if Keller was trying to slum it but it lacks a lot. Who cares though? the food was worth it. Would go if it was in a walmart.
Was lucky enough to sit a few feet away from old man Keller himself while he ate as burgie himself. recommended!

ps- did I mention the milkshake bar? or the dessert burger? OMFG!

not too many breakfast joints listed here. It doesn't need to be vegan/veggie, but some suggestions for the trip next month would be rad.

Admittedly I don't eat breakfast unless im going out with friends but here are my picks for this wonderful city:

-The Pork store for both regular and vegan/vegetarian food. there is one on haight and one on 16th in the mission. Has a good variety. Only been on the mission one though.

-Stacks in Hayes valley. is only breakfast and lunch. I get the smoedk gouda and apple sausage Omlette. Never disappoints.

-Dotties true blue - a city favorite. the wait is no joke.

Sparkys & Orhpans andys in the castro for the greasy spoon diner. Open late if you want a Binner.

Ok so now for my personal favorites now dont you guys go around telling people about these spots because they fucking rule and I dont want to have to deal with tourists and a wait.

-Brendas french soul food - Hands down one of the best meals in the city. banana bread pudding french toast will make you want to shake my hand afterwards. The beignets are incredible but Ive never had the crawfish one because I dont do seafood but heard its on par. Brunch is great but can be a little busy. The Croque Monsieur (Baked ham and Gruyère with bechamel sauce on sliced sourdough) is my jam.

-Louis' 902 Point Lobos Ave- Good food, always great service BUT the view. fuck. get out of here. impress your out of town friends with it.

Herbivore is the only eatery I've been to where I got sick and had to run to the bathroom halfway through my meal.
I really do want to like that place though.

I would like to add to the LIST:

The alembic on haight. had the pressed duck confit with fingerlings. So great.
Also the jerk spiced duck hearts with pickled pineapples. Also my favorite so far the cherry glazed sweetbreads with butternut squash.

Also on the foodie front. Right before Xmas, whenever we had that hail storm, I stood in line on my lunch break from S7 trying to get meet Thomas Keller as he signed copies of Ad-hoc at Omnivore. He showed up late and did a long talk. As you can guess, I didn't meet him and Ad-hoc is still sold out everywhere.
    FML.

Ps- I have a food blog in the works. I'll let you guys know when I launch it.

Please do let us know about your food blog when it's ready!

I think if you'd been able to get a copy of Ad Hoc and have it signed by Chef Keller, he would have signed it "Alex, it's all about finesse," because that's how he signs EVERYTHING.

I haven't bought it yet but saw it at Books, Inc. on Market when I did a reading there a few weeks ago.

haha I would have made him sign it "thanks for waiting in the hail on your lunch break". you better believe I am going to ask(make) him to be on my food blog(s, I am actually doing 2). Think of one of them being the food equivalent of what my videos on kirklands blog are. SF chefs and foodies watch out, I'm about to rock the boat.

I will second that. Dottie's True Blue is definitely worth the wait.

Another breakfast place that I like is Just For You on 22nd St. in the Dogpatch. I'm no expert on beignets, but their's sure are tasty.

I like the Tamale Lady, too. :)

Just around the corner from Just for You on Third is Hard Knox Cafe, where you can get a delicious (and large) Southern/Soul meal for about $10 - 13. Cool place, great food, nice staff, great deal.

Two tourists spots you have to hit someday:

Toy Boat Dessert Cafe - duh

    http://www.yelp.com/biz/toy-boat-desser ... rancisco-2

Escape From New York Pizza on Haight:

One of the best Pesto (with potato slices and whole garlic cloves) this veg-head has ever had.

    **********************************

And the best wine selection and French Provençal this side of Napa, and right by Moscone (think WonderCon) is Lulu (and no, I am NOT biased because of the name

went to Michael Mina's RN74 the other night. It was interesting. i think because it was Michael Mina, i was expecting something more formal. of course, I later realized RN74 is supposed to be a more casual bistro kind of thing. the decor is supposed to be like a train station so it was a bit dark and kinda cold feeling. But still kinda cool. http://michaelmina.net/rn74/

Unfortunately my wife wouldn't let me bust out the camera to take pictures of all the dishes. We had Hamachi Sashimi and the Pork Belly with Manila Clams for appetizers. They were excellent. I could have had a double order of both just for dinner. The sashimi melted in your mouth and the pork belly is just like bacon but twelve times better.

for entre I had the Grilled Prime Beef which came with shortribs. the prime was crunchy on the outside and very tender inside. the addition of the shortrib was interesting and provided for two kinds of loveliness on the same plate.

my wife had the maine sea scallops. Huge... and melt in your mouth.

    fuck, i'm hungry. highly recommended.

Friend took me out to SPQR last night for a belated bday dinner.
    http://www.yelp.com/biz/spqr-san-francisco
It was ok, not bad. Didn't get to try their fried brussel sprouts as I didn't see it on the menu.
Overall the meal was good, but it wasn't amazing.
Place was crammed packed and pretty loud.
I'd rather have sat at the bar to eat and chat w/ my friend than at their small tables.

Went out tonight to Crustacean on Polk and California.
    http://www.yelp.com/biz/crustacean-rest ... -francisco
The crab was pretty amazing w/ the black pepper and butter.
The garlic noodles were also pretty tasty.
But if I had to pay, no way I'm going back.
    Definitely some pricey seafood.
I'd rather go to R&G Lounge for their crab.

And in North Beach amongst all the other Italian places, I like Vicoletto and recommend it.
    http://www.yelp.com/biz/vicoletto-risto ... rancisco-2
It's not on the main street so most people don't usually walk by.
Their squid ink pasta w/ calamari was delicious.
And unlike all the other Italian restaurants there that are packed to the max, the decor is very modern and spacious.

R&G is classic. Fried crab rules. Even Anthony Bourdain has been there.

Forget Crustacean. Goto to the Original...Thanh Long, deep in the Sunset. decor has been the same for 30 years.

Amy- I think toy boat is cool to stop by for generic ice cream. I think its nothing special but live in the neighborhood. Every once in awhile they have some interesting toys in the case. All overpriced. On the other hand GENKI across the st for decent crepes. Always open late too. Tons of candy toys too. (as seen in toypunks)

Kirkland- Curious to try it but all reviews have seemed to be luke warm so far. I have been told the bar is frequented by douchebags. So of course I would fit right in.

Joe - Have the exact same feelings about SPQR.

Anybody been to Spruce or Outerlands that can give me a good review?
