New Restore Vinyl figure for 2011. Still rough, but might be around 5-7 inches tall. RESTORE_ONI by toybot studios, on Flickr really looking forward to this toy... http://www.restore-created.com/blog-1/
I know these things are very subjective, but can the two of you explain what you find special about this sculpt? I just don't get it. I can't imagine wanting one. What am I missing here?
i like the figure's shape and the evil pose his head is making. really dig those tags hanging from the bone on the front of his skull. im guessing here....those tags hold the names of the souls who have cossed this monster's path? SICK!!
Hi Harmond, for me there are several reasons why i'm excited: 1. I love Japanese mythology 2. the traditional Japanese Oni is a favorite 3. This figure is the vinyl version of the resin toy below which is one of my favs. 4. I like toys with bellies bigger than mine. RESTORE Oni Mini Resin by toybot studios, on Flickr
i love japan debris is full of detail (the kanji on the curse paper, the eye on the hand etc..) i can't image how much wil be great the vinyl version that will be double sized
Dudes a force of Nautre. I don't like the proportions of the sketch. But I'll withhold my opionion till I see the sculpt because I'm sure it will be crazy.
I like the mini better. I think I would need to see the final figure. Does anyone remember my reaction when I first saw the 2-headed Bemon? Some sculpts have to grow on you.
I can see why you would love this Rich. And well you should. It will look great on a shelf next to Ollie and the new Doji San vinyl's.
Not a problem When restore released the Jesus and kingdom heart resin figures a while back I wasn't really a fan. But I did like the sculpting and wanted to see what else they do. So I searched their website and came across this ... I LOVE all things Japanese but old Yokai monsters and well just about anything oni are my favorite monsters of all. I love the look and feel of this older historical monster. I guess its has to do with a time when people actually believed these where real that appeals to me. Its not a toy but seeing this made me take a strong interest in this company because if they where making small toy like resin and then stuff like this ... well maybe this would get the resin treatment as well some day. I even contacted them to see how much this original was selling for ... lets just say more than I could afford Not to long after that BAM this happened ! I was stoked as my hunch paid off ( Yes I did grab one of the resin pieces) NOW the news of this guy making his way all the way to vinyl is my prayer being answered. I have been following this before it was even considered for vinyl or even toy form. If I where to break down why this particular sculpt appeals to me .. I love oni and this is as true an oni you can get. The body shape, the form of the hands and feet etc. I like the new addition of the prayer papers covering the face. I just hope they keep the hanging bells. It also fits well into what I collect and if I can somehow score painting a run it will be full circle for me If restore gets fully into the vinyl game they could be one of my favorite new toy companies.
i am really interested in how the sofubi version turns out. Thanks for posting the pics of that life-sized sculpt That thing is incredible!!
Well articulated, Rich! I don't know that I could so thoroughly explain why I like what I do! I certainly think he/Restore is a very talented sculptor. I just don't care for his sculpts (other than the temple being carried by the Oni!).
Thanks, Rich. Those pictures above are amazing. The sketch for the proposed vinyl does not hold the power of that sculpt, but a sketch would hardly do it justice. I guess I will have to wait to see how the vinyl comes out, but if it is as strong as the statute, then I will warm to it very fast.
Even as a neo-kaiju and fight figure fan uneducated in the origins and characters of Japanese folklore I have to say . . . FAAAAAAAAAAAAARK!
This looks fantastic! I love the character and how well they transitioned him into something suitable for vinyl. Wow.
