I was broke as a joke the last time they came through town here, so I didn't go and heavily regretted it. I made sure I saw them this time and it was well worth it. they've always been one of my favorites.

Was it Leticia who was tragically killed a couple of years back? Kind of put me off seeing them.

I went to see Art Brut on SUnday night at the Troubadour in LA - a massive unexepcted treat, they were amazing. Huge excellent riffs combined with a wicked sense of humour. I laughed AND rocked!

Next show is the Subways at the very same place. Not sure if they will be as great as Sunday. The CD is a strange mix of Nirvana-esque rock and Britpop - but not in the same song. Kind of Schizo.

Really wanna see Snow Patrol tomorrow as well. Anyone know anyone with an extra ticket?

    Muton,

It was Mary that was killed.

While she's no longer gracing the stage with her fireside warmth, the groop has replaced her backup vocals with french horn. It's very classy and nice.

Their new stuff has some kraut rocky points as well.

Ultimately my favorite band ever. I've seen them at least 20 times. 8)

    jltohru,
93 was an awesome time for the groop. The "transient random noise burst with announcements" was their first US tour.

By far my favorite tour had to be Emperor tomato Ketchup. I followed them up the cali coast that tour.
At the Troubadour in Hollywood they were joined by Sonic Boom, filtering the bands sound through sonic devices smokin' a bit fat spliff. Incredible.

Thanks for the info Paul. Totally got the wrong end of the stick on who was killed. Bike accident in London right?

U mentioned Sonic Boom. Anyone here old enough to have seen Spacemen 3? I saw em a few times, mainly in dodgy pubs around Hammersmith. I remember them sitting down with their backs to the audience most of the time. I was intrigued, and only later realized they pretty much copped that from the VU.

I love 4 AD bands. Is there an AMAZON.COM list I should use to get their catalogue?

So I'd like to thank whoever added Stereolab to one of the RFSO Radio compilations a while back.

"The Black Arts" was the first song of theirs I heard (knowingly, I probably came across them on an XM station once in a while and skipped past it), and it never left my iPod. I just bought Sound-Dust, am halfway through my first listen-through, and am thoroughly enjoying it.

    So again, thanks.

Such an amazing group. I remember walking into a comic book store years and years ago and hearing ""transient random noise burst with announcements" in the background. Gorgeous stuff.

Been loving Stereolab since the early 90's ! Peng and Switched On were my faves, somehow they always cheer me up.

Skylar you're from South Jersey? I grew up there. Vineland NJ to be exact! Social Mecca of all South Jersey  I miss the Jersey shore.

4AD is awesome. The graphics for the albums by Vaughn Oliver and the bands complimented each other so well.

    roger, that was me

they are one of my absolute favorites. many people will tell you that only the older albums are good and that "you only need to own one" of the newer records, but I disagree. I think Sound Dust is drastically underrated and one of their best.

You can say that again. Sometimes the quality of the cover art exceeded the quality of the music. Unfortunately I don't think his designs for the 12" vinyl format translated very well to CD labels, but that's not his fault. Some of his layout and typographic innovations from the mid 80s still look current.

Cool to see so much love here for Stereolab.

and the details on the tragic accidental death of mary was that she was backed over by a truck driver while unlocking her bike. not quite a biking accident.

this band has been my fave since transient random noise....heard it at a friends. when the second song came on, i was like, who is this? by the time the 4th song was on, i was out the door and on my way to a record store to buy it. bought it, listened to it all evening and night and the next day, i went over to berkeley, which was the only place around that had their older stuff and bought everything i could. and have been since.

seen them i believe 5 or 6 times now and will do it again.

my favorite band before them had been the pixies.

now i'm kinda prone towards the fiery furnaces...a-MAZE-ing band to see live.

Just got back from seeing them. Damn, they are so good. It was cool that Monade was the first warm-up band.
