love those model kits. ive been trying to buy some older showa era books with similar illustration styles, its so wonderful.

every time i find a cool model kit on YJP, it skyrockets out of my budget. then im faced with dilemma of keeping it unbuilt or not! however, of the vintage kits ive purchased, they've both been built up haha

I would be thrilled to just have an art book that collects all these incredible box covers. Ditto for all the vintage kaiju artwork. Does such a thing exist? If so, please post any links or info. I don't even dare to dip my toes into collecting from the model kit realm, haha.

heres one that i have, ill have to photograph my other one today. this focuses on aliens and cryptids from around the world, and my other book is about ghosts and demons worldwide.

i think somewhere on the forum people have posted about old kaiju artbooks, i really remember one that was centered around pachi monsters and stuff like that, but my search skills are lacking on the mobile platform

It wouldn't surprise me at all if there was. I have spent actual hours just perusing the books in the 'art' section of bookshops in Japan, being in awe of the amazing compendiums and photography of obscura and miscellany.

@michael Yeah, that is pretty great man! I was referring more to the 'collections' books, but definitely, the crazy books of monster, kaiju, yokai, etc. are right up there with some of the best things put to paper.

Oh man that Ghidorah would look killer if you had tall enough walls to have it look over your collection.

@Alebrije - Awesome piece of King Ghidorah artwork! I also really like that it has the company logo on the foot. Hope it went to a good home where it will be displayed. I agree with @decypher , it would look incredible above a collection.

Another bagged & sealed Marusan silver-eyed Mothra just sold for over 100K JPY:

It also looks like the header card is in really good shape. I am always tempted by these, but the premium for sealed vintage is steep. I have seen a few of these circulating now, and I'm wondering how many are out there, or if a box of unsold toys was discovered at some point. There is even a picture of a similar sealed Mothra with the same header/insert on the back of Yuji Nishimura's Godzilla Toy History book.

This rare Marusan giant kaiju was relisted again:

Sold for 40,000 JPY less than the first listing from just over a month ago. Still hurts just as much to miss another chance at the beast.

This wasn't me, but if it has been, you can be darned sure I'd be having anyone here that wanted to over for some delicious (and finger burning) hot red bean-filled delights! One of those wonderful items that is just so much more fun than the average person might think [to nuts like us]. A worthy expenditure of some yen right there.

    Never seen this before...
Vintage Item of EXTREME interest to me finally shows up, I'm outbid by super HIGH amount. Ok, over it...life goes on.
Same item shows up again next day for High BIN price. Every 5-6 hours seller raises, then lowers the price.
    Lame.

    Yeah perfect.

This and that "extended auction". Total shill-enabling.

I absolutely loathe "extended auction time" Why? I wish YJA would do away with that crap. Was put in to prevent last minute bidders from out-bidding and sniping an auction in the last minute I assume, but the alternative totally lends itself to dickhead sellers who shill bid their own auctions up with dummy accounts like Paul said. I guess Yahoo Japan needs any options that increase their cut. Wonder how Verizon buying Yahoo will affect YJA in the future?

    Total fucking garbage regardless.

Quite possibly the finest Bullmark Mechani-Kong I have ever seen just went for 68K JPY:

I thought for a minute that this just might be the one for my first robo-ape adoption, but the gods of the yen said otherwise. Just a beautiful specimen in incredible condition:

@chimply.kaiju - did you snag this one? Congrats to whomever landed it. What a treasure.

@deafmetal - I wish I snagged it! I was following it, but had no plans on bidding. Definitely a beautiful piece.

Very interesting Mechanikong there. I'm guessing it was repainted/touched-up...and since the grey vinyl Mechanikong regularly breaks ¥100k easily, it appears I'm not alone. As lovely as it looks, I actually think I prefer the more common vintage paint scheme: the blue on the vintage figure is less heavy-handed, so more of the grey vinyl shows through. The silver spray is also a lot more intense here, but I actually kinda dig that.

@Sanjeev - Interesting that you think this one was repainted. There are some color rubs on the back, which made me think it might be original paint. That is one reason I'm not comfortable putting up large bids on these kongs, I just don't know enough about them. I do like this look though with the heavy blue and silver sprays. Great info, thank you.

Beautiful specimen indeed. I am to sure what to make of it, or the condition and brightness of the paint either. I would love to have him standing on my shelf, but am definitely wary (of spending that imaginary money I don't have ;) ) of putting too much yen into a purchase of something I am not 100% on, or couldn't gamble with. Not only is the blue so bright, but for me the metallics are almost more of a flag; the silvery face and mouth are just so heavy and shiny, I don't know. I wouldn't immediately think it is a repaint, but I certainly couldn't offer guarantees it isn't, which to me is the main thing. As I've said many times before, if I was making these purchases (which I am not, so of course it is easy to sit on the sidelines and offer opinions), I would just want to hold the toy in hand, to get my own impression. Even though you can easily be fooled, the best of experts might, but judging simply from a couple of YJA photos - which, thankfully, this auction actually had more of and were in nice state (i.e. not the usual blurry, tiny YJA images) - is less than ideal.

And it could just be this toy has been left in such incredible condition through the years, and is as it claims. Certainly we have all seen the incredible variations in paint over time/artist/etc. that could account for the differences here. Regardless, a mighty fine looking toy and a gorgeous example of that early metal ape. A lovely addition to a Bullmark collection.
