Would love to see them preserve as much of the original structure and heritage as possible. Sadly, Montreal (and probably Canadian cities in general, I would say) are not known for their retainment of original neighbourhoods and architecture/history when it comes to 'modern' redevelopment projects. I really hope this might be an exception. They could learn a lot from European cities.

I am really crushed to hear this news. Much like the Gibeau Orange Julep just down the way, this place was an actual mainstay for me that sustained me in real tough times, especially when funds were limited. I would travel all the way across the city on public transit just to go to a showing, but did so happily. A proper, no-frills, enjoy your movie, old-fashioned cinema. And I don't mean because it was classic, vintage, or proposed to offer any sort of incredible experience. It was what it was, a place to come, enjoy movies, and have the entire experience be accessible - in an age where such things were quite uncommon. I will be sad to see it go, even if I can't frequent it anymore. I appreciate media consumption is changing, but for me (and I am sure many others), there is still no replacement for the experience of going out to a collective big-screen viewing. So the loss of venues like this is not some sort of lament of nostalgia, but more disappointment for the current and future generations who won't get a chance to have that. I thank you, Bernie, for some good times and sharing the movie-going experience with locals for 18 years.

And let's face it, you can't get much for a buck these days (or $2.50 now). :(

A bit disappointed to hear this news. I had the best falafel of anywhere in Montreal (and could well be globally, now that I think about it) in Nilufar, and it is something which always comes up in any conversation about falafel. Even back in the day I remember the incredible prices - under $2 for a wrap, and it wasn't so long ago, really - but that was nothing compared to the fresh ingredients and tasty food. In a city replete with excellent Arabic fare, this was still a favourite haunt. 30 years on Sainte-Catherine, you know they were doing something right. Hopefully they can find somewhere new to relocate to.

Hmm, seems I have not been posting any exciting news of late here, but I am sorry to read just now that The Main has closed, too. While I had not been (being out of the city) since it was sold by the original Vavaro family several years back and I gather changed somewhat for the worse, still sorry to lose another great institution of the city. Always a decent alternative to queuing across the street, I would happily give them some custom still. Not too many excellent smoked meat places left, and certainly fewer in the central area. The Main was one of those excellent places [originally] dedicated to quality and doing everything in house; I think it earned it's fanbase and reputation, even if it went a bit more towards the diner versus deli aspect in more recent periods. I bid it a fond farewell. Man, could I use a smoked meat sandwich right now, and always. :(
