Ill be in Hollywood next week on a business trip. I have been offered a job in LA with my company, starting in March. Im still on the fence about the move - but believe its the right decision. If anyone has cool LA facts or other California info to help me make my decision, please post! Ill be moving from Colorado (I know there are a lot of pros and cons for both these states) Also, if any vinyl-related functions are happening next wed or thurs night in LA - lemme know. Matt
People who visit seem to love it or hate it. Most people that live here seem to love it (except for the traffic). http://www.skullbrain.org/bb/viewtopic. ... ht=welcome http://bldgblog.blogspot.com/2007/10/gr ... geles.html
LA is cool, for me it can get a bit too city life for me, like a random bum singing to you while you are trying to eat Pita Pit or a bunch of twacked out guys in Pop Killers trying to hold a conversation with you. The traffic isn't annoying if you just zone out and drive as long as you aren't eating or talking on a cel phone driving isn't a big deal. You can surf, skate and snowboard in the same day at certain times of the year and if you are solitary you can go whole weeks without anyone even giving a shit about what you are doing or up too and nobody, even friends, will know what you are doing the whole time because everyone is pretty pre-occupied. I really enjoy that part of it I prefer to be alone a lot but around people if that makes sense. I have been all over the country and out of it and I would never want to call any other place home.
Sorry Collin and don't take this the wrong way.... but..... Orange County is not LA Matt, Which city is the office you would be relocating to? Is it actually Hollywood? Doing a stint in LA is a good thing. Why not? You can always move back to CO if you don't like it. The three things I miss about LA are my family, the food and the beach.
I think being offered a job somewhere different, and potentially interesting, could well be a good choice for a move. Weather is good here, and we have toy stores, close to SDCC, plus you can get to some OK mountains, and the sea. Collin said some good stuff in his post. In the US I have only ever lived in LA so its hard to compare to other US cities. Having come from London, I can say London is more happening culturally, and closer in spirit to NY than LA is. When I visited LA in the early 90's I honestly got no feel for it as a tourist here for a few days. Maybe with local guides that could be a differnt experience. I also feel it has no center, more a comglomeration of areas, which poeple tend to stick to. It's true, one can go without seeing friends for a year at a time, something I never expreienced elsewhere - and somewhat sobering. Driving is essential, and getting worse all teh time. I drove more here in my first 6 months than in 8 years driving in the UK - I also drink virtually nothing as I am always driving. I read that LA is currently center of club culture these days - not sure as I keep seeing DJ names who were big in London 10 years ago - maybe they still are - don't know. I think LA is pretty good for live music - lots of venues. Oh yeah, there is a ton of good theater here, not just teh big shows, but smaller theaters with lots of talented people and not enough work. Placido DOmingo is director of teh LA Opera, and he has really brought the standard up - the productions rival New York these days - if you are an opera fan its amazing, and tickets are cheaper than NY or London. You also get great sushi here at reasonable prices....errrr... thats all I can say. I say; worth a shot overall.
Bizzare sight driving down to SDCC last year . . . a suit in a Beemer, holding cel phones in each hand up to his ears, holding a conference call while driving with his knees! In the UK they've made it illeagal to use mobile phones whilst driving and they're now talking about 'hands free' operation being a no-no too! Frickin' nanny-state!
I think making talkng on a cell phone while driving illegal is a good thing. I do it myself, but I know I relinquish control to do that. Hands-free is a slightly different matter - I also think it reduces ones control due to lapses in concentration, BUT selfishly it keeps mesane when stuck in traffic and with so little time these days, using my commute time to make calls is what keeps me in touch with people. Actually, thanks to Scary Andy, and his surprise Christmas gift - my commute has been much more bearable of late. Well, I've actually only commuted once since Christmas but, I know it will be a while beofre his gift runs out of its pleasure giving potential...and NO perverts ..it NOT a vibrator!!!!
Thank God I only live about 7 miles from work,12 min max to get there, all highway driving..How long is your commute carl?
I live 31 miles from work. Mostly 101 freeway. At best it takes 50 minues, at worst 1 hour 50 minutes - that's each way. I had a great job at Universal Music Group, which was 6 miles a away, but I had a psycho entertainment boss and had to quit - I did last 5 years though, and I still miss that short commute.
move to LA because it's going to fall off the map one day.CO will be there forever and so will the Ramseys...unless they've moved to LA too.
I moved to LA to be with my GF who is now my wife back in the mid 80's from MD till the begining of 1990. I live in a tough hood where I lived in MD. Having set foot in LA I had a run in with some street gangs and was almost robbed at gunpoint at a bus stop. All in the first month. Wild and fun/crazy when you're 18 but looking back at it I was just glad I survived the 80's in LA. . Also before I decided to move there all my friends was talking about how laid back it is in California. Never saw it. I found laid back surprisingly here where I live now in NC.
Hey Robert, where did you live in MD? I just bought my first home, in Baltimore, right across the street from the Waverly farmers' market on 32nd and Barclay near Charles Village. I love it!
Thanks for the info guys. I believe our studio is in Hollywood/Mid-City LA - I Think its the Carthay Square/Circle area. Ill be looking for an apartment in the neighborhood, my uncle owns an apartment building close to there, so maybe I can pull some strings. I cant wait for SDCC - Ill finally be close enough to attend - may even be making the trip as a business expense with the company! Ill know more after my trip this week.
Are you guys doing a breakfast anytime soon? I leave back home next week, and I wanted to hang with LASK.
