I second this, I completely dig the innovative concept and fun execution here. I know I got a smile when I was following the development of this toy. Which, really, what more could you ask for? :)

I wouldn’t say fugly by any means. But I would say the sculpting and paint is mediocre. And to me it’s trying very hard to be Zollmen. My bigger gripe is the overall market, and the overwhelming praise for anything that kind of looks like Godzilla. It just feels like low hanging fruit these days.

Solid points there, Joe. I think I saw roughness as part of the charm, but it is definitely not to everyone's tastes. I guess I was thinking more of the relative association with the stuff that surrounds it in this thread, it was an anomaly. I have zero idea what the price on this was, but I am going to be honest and say that actually that sort of thing - e.g. where the 'artist' sees themselves and their method of sales/accessibility to the fans has a massive impact on whether something goes quickly in the 'ignore' or straight to 'outright disdain' pile, for me.

One thing I'm noticing in these recent posts is how many of these toys are painted so that there are thin black lines around every detail. I feel like painted or not, the surface detail of the vinyl should be given a chance to speak for itself. The result is very non-toy-like to me. It looks like a 3D version of a color comic strip.

These things do not inspire joy for me—they do the opposite. I think that’s why I have a hard time considering them real toys. But by making it a “toy”, they tap into the intrinsic accessibility of toys—but it feels like they’re trespassing and shitting on the couch rather than joining the party.

And the LOTTERY gimmick that is used—I’ve seen IG users who seem to win all the time—but not before licking a lot of butt. So that doesn’t even feel cool. Just a money making formula when coupled with the uninspired toy design just feels like a scam. Congrats, you won the raffle; here’s your used fly swatter….oh, well I guess there’s the dopamine rush of winning something (*fart*)

They are rebel scum revolting against their elders. Either that, or just revolting.

I mean, wow. The toys themselves are.... yeah....but then you see the markup to be blessed by Shig's paint. Go figure.

That one-off Astroboy thing literally looks like it’s caked in shit.
Maybe that’s going to be the new trend, grime/poo colorways?

The sheer amount of franchise-ripping toys is just so sad. Imagine being so devoid of originality that you can’t think of your own paint jobs.

I personally love the Apple Trap clown. Invokes a bit of the street figure structure and proportion, and I rather enjoy the design.

I’ll admit, it’s definitely not the worst one up there. But man, do I dislike clowns.
