The fugliest toys you have seen while collecting.

I met Frank Mysterio at Five Points this weekend, very fun guy. When I visited his table I asked him Skullbrain's burning question: "Why all the penises?" Then I started pointing out the penises on his figures. "Penis, penis, penis, penis, penis... there's a lot of penis on this table."

He laughed, and told me (paraphrasing as best I can here because it was very loud in that venue), "I am a living being. When I create my figures, they are living beings. I have a penis, so my figures have penises."

I accepted this answer, but looking back at the table, I noticed something. I picked up one of his Garamon figures and pointed out the lack of a penis. Then he showed me the back.



I'm at peace with it.

I also caught up with Tolzar Toys, the maker of King Krawju, and in person the figure is very impressive. Good vinyl colors chosen and some novel filler material for the clear figures. The parts even come in a big mesh bag like the ones crayfish are sold in at the supermarket. He says the figure is doing well and he moved quite a few of them at the show. I told him I'm happy to be proven wrong in a case like this.

Mr. White:

... not sure I believe that explanation, none of his earlier toys had a penis. It started with the nag rip-offs. I'd guess he's tried toys with and without dick, and the ones with a dick sell more, otherwise it would be weird adding a dick if they sold less.

 

His Aztec toys are actually pretty decent! His ugly toys are....well, ugly as fuck, just not in an endearing way.

I appreciate how he is really helping build a sofubi scene in Mexico though. I may not be a fan of his art but I'm a fan of what he's trying to do building a community. Him and Mad Hunter have really helped grow things a lot down there.

I think you have to string it up yourself, which I suppose is kind of fun.

I’m personally not a fan of any BDSM toys. Makes these toys too much like “adult toys”. It’s bad enough everybody assumes that’s what I collect when I say “I’m a toy collector!”

It’s ugly but props to that dude for pulling his own own vinyl. All these Americans saying fuck it and doing it themselves is great. In a couple years he’s going to have a line of people asking him to pull stuff for them.

He’s at the beginning of an experiment, just like say Mile High or Quail Toy. If he’s passionate and keeps pushing his manufacturing knowledge, in a few years he could be pulling legit vinyl.

 

I don't think it's fair to call Mile High an "experiment" in 2024. He's been operating as a business for five years now. It is Paul's full time job.

 

Right, that’s what I’m saying. Paul had the desire to make his own vinyl, it was an experiment. He succeeded with trial and error, it became a legit factory. It’s possible now, he’s proven it. Quail has proven it. Craftsman is currently doing it. You just have to start, even if it’s not pretty at first.
