Nice Thee Michelle Gun Elephant post, I love those guys. I didn't realize their guitar player just passed away a few weeks ago. I've been digging the Stance Punks a lot lately as well.
This Toru Takemitsu Soundtrack Documentary really blew my mind! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-EgfDya9CGc I also really love the Acid Mothers Temple.... Awesome Japanese/Kraut Space Rock http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jUZL6wbxKok http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y1QfIUON ... re=related Honourable mentions to DJ Krush, UFO, Yellow Magic Orchestra & Cornelius.
Wow! That comes as quite a shock actually ... I had no idea. He was only 42. Too young. This isn't him - I'm not sure what he did after TMGE. I thought he was in Rosso, but apparently not. Whatever, it's one of the bands that came out of the split and a great song: The Birthday ~ "Stupid": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oGJNNKtw6z4
Mo'some Tonebender ~ Dawn Rock: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uMNp4qltyvA Echo: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LEB5UrymQVg Unhappy Newage: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1c_8uqpywto Tiger: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X74FVJ6nG5U
Japanoise, as someone said earlier, is very interesting, but most of it doesn't (at least for me) bear repeated listens. Violent Onsen Geisha is an exception to this. "No samplers, keyboards or synthesizers used in the making of this recording", it usually says somewhere on his albums. Otis: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JuH2UDlcDHY Night Of Unclean Water: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sKHV7EyPksY Sameni Kuwareta Musume: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CxayCDUB4Ew He also goes under the name The Hair Stylistics. Here he is live: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3zSYU1xIRB4
It's only rock'n'roll ... Hanatarash demolish their venue with a bulldozer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jtEfPaTi1hc And the audience literally flee from a Hijokaidan performance: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BC2lBwFHa5o ( <- NSFW !!!! ) ... but I like it!
And let's not forget Yoko Ono ~ A great artist, as anyone who's ever been to one of her exhibitions will attest to. Also, believe it or not, a classically-trained singer ('minyo' I think it's called). Fly: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NANDNspWDJc Oh Wind, Body Is The Scar Of Your Mind: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LVPYYnT1Mq8 Oh John, Let's Hope For Peace: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V2FqXEXsUUo
I love Yoko, especially the album "Fly." So many good songs on that album, such a killer band. The opening vocal on "Don't Worry Kyoko (Mommy's Only Looking for Her Hand in the Snow") still gives me chills. Possibly the most unfairly maligned and misunderstood figure in popular music, ever.
My favorite animu song ... "Excel Saga" ~ Ending (w/English subs): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=61GFr8fVs6g&NR=1 And my favorite karaoke number ... Fundoshi ~ Beach Love: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F58x0NjHd14
Actually, I hate karaoke. Inevitably sometimes get dragged along though, and when I do I usually request someone sing this: Another anime song ... the theme to "Attack No.1" ~ http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x1kuqd ... -no1_music (Can't find the original on YouTube - prob cuz of the appalling new version that's out. This one, by Go!Go!7188 , is passable though: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LId1HjBb_3o ) If I could sing, I might choose this myself: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PwkvhNNuBwo (Extra otaku points if you can tell what it is just from the image macro! )
I was at Guitar Wolfs last show in GA with Bass Wolf ( Hideaki Sekiguchi) before he died ...before the show he was walking around asking if anyone had any weed. Lately F*ck on the Beach has been ruling my playlist.
Oh hai! It's THIS thread again! :3 I'm not really hardcore anything myself (although my local record store does file Boris under 'Hardcore Japanese Punk' ) so I was kind of hoping sumone else would post more like the above. I DO like these guys. Called 'Digital Metal' here, I heard some Ausfailian call them a "shitty grindcore band". (There is apparently MORE THAN ONE band called Wrench.) Whatever, the gitarist reminds me personally of none other than Ed Ozric. Their best tracks are on albums, but these will have to do: WRENCH ~ Sky, Liquid, Men : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ptd5p4lIn20 Take Away : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ANC8rEECs3k
I also love da BOOM BOOM SATELLITES, but I only have a couple of their early singles. (They look kind of SCARY in recent vidyas. Anyone else care to recommend anything? Boom Boom Satellites ~ On The Painted Desert (1st single) : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f2KHI89FAng Push Eject (The best ... ?) : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d7C1nnR9DpU Kick It Out (recent hit due to being used in TVCM) : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0EqIw7o3vtE
i really have no idea how it took me this long to stumble into this part of the boards and see this thread. i should have guessed... I can't believe it took a page and a half before anyone mentioned boris. i've been lucky enough to see them a handful of times and its a spectacle. michio completely tears the guitar a new asshole and between that and the drummer shrieking like a girl and ferociously banging a gong, its quite the sideshow. a bunch of you guys have mentioned some other great stuff, but i'll add mine to the list... I really dig Kiiiiiii. they're strange and cute. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yPP8waT5 ... re=related Cornelius Merzbow boredoms Ghost sexy synthesizer melt banana did anyone mention DMBQ? check this one out.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eEgjIYso ... re=related there are a ton others that i'm a fan of. i can't remember at the moment. a couple of my friends are coming out with a documentary on the tokyo underground music scene and they've definitely expanded my horizons in that regard.
While Boris put on a great show I wouldn't use "spectacle" or "sideshow" as descriptors. I felt it was a pretty straight-forward wail-fest. While Wata absolutely shreds, she does it in a very detached, serene manner. Atsuo is the only one who really goes nuts. Even though the music is quite different the vibe of the show reminded me of seeing JSBX years ago (I dunno if they still rock like they use to).
yeah i guess you're somewhat right. i mean, atsuo DID stage dive off his kick drum at the end of the show.. other than that, I think i'd agree with you. although, i will say its quite a spectacle just to watch michio shred..
my friend modell ran lights for boris last time they came thru..and they gave him a sheet of paper a mile long with words like violentness..beautifulity and ambient religious feel..on how they wanted the lights done..my friend said ok and just did what he could anyway this is good ninja moshing http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oZg8J-5npls
Wow, I was up till 3am last night watching most of the videos in this thread but this Strawberry Chips remix and the original version are really great. Those girls are dangerously cute!!!
AKB48 "Heavy Rotation": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lkHlnWFnA0c Well, there goes 'no-fap December' (Video directed by Mika Ninagawa, a Japanese photographer known for her vibrant and brightly colored photographs of flowers, goldfish, and landscapes.)
AKB's star seems to be ascending, even as the appalling Morning Musume enter a long-deserved decline. Personally, for pop-poop, I'm presently particularly partial to Perfume: Polyrhythm: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1vCcmeiFTHM Plastic Smile: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YiMKZA_-los Game: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BwLa0o_rXyY Baby Cruising Love: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QqofGg9-tBQ Chocolate Disco: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5JjV71fWq_s Macaroni: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7MdaHEDjjQk Ceramic Girl: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qCPNZgTjSN4 Take Me Take Me: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IBsdjIzhpQ4 Secret Secret: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ktSjyQxyZ38 Butterfly: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_GFV5vcR4Gw Twinkle Snow Powdery Snow: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eulHzmF-Ux4 Puppy Love: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n8CaBUoE3WU Oops! Hahaha. Perfume rock my world as well. For the person who was looking for Japanese downtempo/ambient. You can check out the labels Green, Shin-ra-nui, Sonic Plate, Plop and Triple-6. Or just pick up an issue of Fader or After Hours (the Japanese one, probably the best music magazine out there) and check the ads. My favorite would be Supercar, Machine Gun TV, Ôtal, Chikopido, Peatmos, Red Go-Cart, Rocky Mountain Broncos Power, Halcali, Chara, Our Hour, Add, Envy, Snail Ramp, Asa-Chang and Junray, Sugar Plant, Luminous Orange, Citrus... I used to work in the indie music world in Japan. Good times.
