Drew To, who goes by @ un.affiliated on Instagram, is not at all new to toys as both a collector and an independent maker. Sculpting, casting, pulling and painting his own, original resin toys since 2014 Drew’s been a constantly rotating cog of creative improvement and refinement. As of June 1st, 2021, Drew releases his first soft vinyl figure, Lil’ Creeper AKA Fred, or Fred the Creeper, produced in the US through Mile High Sofubi.

First thing’s first, I have to say that I am actually impressed with the quality of vinyl presented. That’s not to say I don’t find fault or obvious differences; there are some. But what is handed to collectors by Drew does feel nice, especially in comparison to what I’d seen from Mile High in the beginning, and the toy itself is a fun one. Fred’s a character that’s been produced in resin for quite some time now, and I feel it’s precedes the time in which overly textured and forced toys were abundant. I really enjoy the goofy proportions of this guy, and the derpy expression of fluttery lips and gnarly teeth make him extremely playful. I’m sure we’ll be seein’ more from Unaffiliated over time, hopefully some new heads and more painted versions. This first one here was the recent Halloween release, loosely takin’ after Captain Spaulding from Rob Zombie’s House of 1,000 Corpses, while the mixed parts was sold out of his backpack this past DCon. Stickers were produced by @ toy goons on Instagram!

Unaffiliated’s second offering into the American made sofubi world, this is Loomis. Directly inspired by Rob Zombie’s Halloween, specifically young Michael’s Halloween mask. The name directly comin’ from Michael’s psychiatric physician, Dr. Loomis. I love this toy. A lot. I can appreciate Drew not immediately goin’ for a straight - from - the - movie paint app, but instead chose to go a more vintage, dirty kinda route with the mask. The arms look to have a muddier, matte paint. The vinyl color is very interesting, too. Reminds me of earwax. Also, the stickers were produced by our very own @bigluelok, and they came out fantastic.

The third installment to Unaffiliated’s character lineup comes in the form of a two - time sinister grinner by the name of JACK. Donning a single head with dual faces, Jack represents All Hallow’s, all year. One, much more evil in its smile and eyes, while the other, to me, visually reminds me of the opening credits pumpkin for John Carpenter’s Halloween. Black, orange and gold sprays atop an orange vinyl base, this is a pretty damn near perfect Halloween sofubi toy. I’m very eager to see what colors, versions and releases are to come in the future!
