Over the years i've had various conversations with Skullbrainers re: Japanese video games i.e. Famicom, Super Famicom, Neo/SNK, Game & Watch, Megadrive etc. Thought it would be cool to have a place to post anything vintage video game related (memorabilia, consoles, games, artwork, re-issue info).

Anyone have any collection pics to share? I'll start off with a few photos from my past obsession.

I originally started collecting japanese LCD handhelds then moved to Famicom & SNK stuff. Here's some Super Famicom box art. Always loved the Japanese versions because so much more effort and attention to detail was put into the artwork on the cartridges, instructions and packaging.

I love KiKi KaiKai: Nazo no Kuro Manto (Pocky and Rocky). I cant remember the names of the first two.

I remember I used to own a Super Famicon RPG game about a little magician that throws his hat as a weapon and you also get magic elemental cards. I don't even know how we got through an entire RPG game like that from start to finish without knowing a single word in Japanese, but it was quite fun. I think we just explored everything until the story continued itself, hahaha. I have no idea what it was called but I never regretted buying it when I was about 10 years old or younger.

It was my first time playing a Japanese game, I didn't own a Super Famicon so I had to break off the two little plastic pieces on my SNES to play it.

Oh wow, I actually found it! It was "Chou Makai Taisen! Dorabochan", known as "The Twisted Tales of Spike McFang" in the US. He was also a Vampire not a Magician.

Yeah' you're right. He's even wearing the baseball cap with the knight armor on the cover. The armor threw me off.

    Yes, they are...

    • ~ Super Ninja-Kun
      ~ Super Adventure Island II
~ Kiki KaiKai: Nazo no Kuro Manto (aka Pocky & Rocky)

@ ShadowSpectre - Chou Makai Taisen! Dorabochan looks like fun and with it's funky 16bit goodness.

LMAO! That Splatterhouse cover is ridiculously deceiving (in a good way). I could picture a mother buying this for her 5 year old son just based on the cover and not knowing what they're getting themselves into.

    Oh man, YES!
I've recently been watching Game Center CX!
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=selphRRk ... ure=relmfu

And because of that show, I have been getting back into retro games.
Just bought a PSP to play Gradius Collections, and been grinding through Ghost n Goblins.

From cover art, to unreleased weird gems, vintage Japanese video games is where it is at!

Its true! I still want to re-buy a PSX just to get Gunners Heaven. It plays very similar to Gunstar Heroes.

Nice ones Moog. I wish I still had my Dokey Kong Mini Arcade. I have no idea what happened to it.

I also had some of those classic Game and Watch games. I wish I still had them, those games never get boring. :(

Gunners Heaven is neat. Definitely a more cartoony Metal Slug/Gunstar Heroes.

    Some other weird, Japanese games:

    Roommania #203
    Ore No Ryuori
    Bishi Bashi
    Rakugaki Showtime
    Gaia Seed
    Darius X
    Cho Aniki...

I need to scramble up some of the artwork for these titles and others.
    Man, great thread!

This thread makes me happy. Love Famicom art from instructions. Video game art got me into kaiju in the first place, between Gargamel and just some of the inspirations taken from video games in general.
The collections here are awesome too!

Excellent graphic design magazine, this issue is pretty much dedicated to Japanese videogame design.

Seeing the fonts of game series is so cool. Love the Biohazard comparisons. I know it's not "old school" but still a really cool evolution. The Street Fighter series had some awesome art and fonts going on.

I love old school games, but I'll be honest, I emulate. I do however own an original Super Famicom version of Super Metroid w/ the box and all the inserts. The box is a bit sun faded, but I picked it up years ago for cheap so I can't complain. :)

    Such Great stuff guys...

@ Pilso & Moog. Famicom blog is so good. Opens up so many great collecting resources through that site. Oh yeah, sweet hand helds and advertising Moog. Brings back so many memories seeing them.

@ Ribbon Controller & I am the Fourth. Love GameCentre CX. Thanks for posting, I forgot about that show. Havent watched in ages. Gets me so motivated to play.

@ Rudebeast. Video game issue of Idea magazine is fantastic. So inspiring and great to see the logos and artwork presented so well.

@ Hellopike. Emulation is the way. So much easier for just jumping on and playing. I'm running a multi game arcade board in my cab (inc all the Neo-Geo games). it's so great having all games alphabetized and displayed in a nice menu. Wish I had Famicom stuff emulated, esp Super Fami.
