I saw a handful of these at DCon. And while I personally don't agree too much with the price tag(just yet, maybe), I did end up liking a couple body/head combinations. They're definitely a lot chunkier than I initially thought, which was kinda cool. Overall, still not something I'd own, but I was slightly persuaded to a change of opinion when seeing it in hand.

The price sounds high, but from what I've seen the extra few bucks could easily be justified by the packaging. I haven't seen a good photo of the packages yet, but each toy comes with its own VHS-style art box.

That's crazy!! I'm a skateboard collector and had no idea these existed. New I assume? Crazy they just put the vinyl toy right on the board. Heroin is a pretty gnar group of skaters. Love that they are down.

Yeah I think these are just being released, I follow Heroin on instagram and just saw them the other day. I started collecting skateboards with the Heroin Welcome to Antarctica team deck that James Jarvis did the art for some years back and then got the madballs inspired decks they did. They've done a lot of great graphics I just wish they could screen print them, they would be so much nicer! I've been collecting Hammers for that lately.

I was skating back in the 80s, but I gotta say, those are some pretty cool decks .I wonder if they will interest folks not aware of sofubi and if it will lead anyone to a new hobby.

I was a Zorlac guy. Pushead actually did most of their graphics. I can't find the one I had (which bothers me to no end, because I can't really remember the image besides it having been awesome). Zorlac had some really oddly shaped decks (which look pretty funny compared with today's uniformity). People would tell me they were more prone to breakage, but that never happened with mine. I probably just wasn't SKATE HARDing enough. This one's kind of lame as far as Pushead's other stuff at the time, but you can see the shape's pretty unusual.

Actually, I just realized most of you guys here are probably about my age and already know this shit. Oh, well. If I've touched just one young person's heart, it was worth it ;)

Can you describe the Zorlac deck at all that you had and can not find?

I have about 25 issues of Thrasher from 1985 - 1989 so I might be able to help identify it.

Er, I'm pretty sure it had some sort of skull on it? Seriously, the only thing specific I can remember is that it was kind of a limey/florescent green. Not sure how much of a help that's going to be :| One thing you could do is Google image search for Zorlac, see what's out there, and you would know what it wasn't, to narrow it down. I'm assuming you're in the US? I know search results vary by what Country they're done in. Not sure this is something you'd want to put significant man-hours into, though. That's pretty awesome you have those mags! Probably a good chance it's in there. I'd owe you big time if you were able to find this thing. You're a champ to even offer, man.

Bit of a detour (like I am wont to do). That Zorlac deck was the only deck I had that I was satisfied with the graphic. Every single other deck I had to redesign. Mostly I'd stencil a large Samhain or Misfits logo across them, but there was one I put quite a bit of work into. I reproduced the cover of TSOL's Dance with Me (reformatted to fit the deck, of course) on it. (you guys picking up on my Grim Reaper fetish yet? it's actually not a huge thing, just some recent synchronous occurrences)

I was pretty proud of it. I had just started getting into graff around that time and I'd done my first piece on the back of a community hall near my family's house (it was pretty isolated there, mostly a big farm). So, I went back one night to do some touch ups or something, and while I'm at it a pick up truck swings into the lot like they're SWAT (not sure if they'd been going up there every night since I started it or what. no way anyone could've seen me). I took off into the nearby woods but I left my skateboard with the art I'd worked so hard on behind :( Like I said, I was a pretty inexperienced writer at the time, and really didn't know enough then to have an exit strategy worked out. It was in the middle of nowhere, after all. Least I didn't get caught, I guess. Anyway, my folks could clearly see the piece on the long road leaving our little enclave and they immediate recognized my tag. I must've been a complete flippin' idiot back then.

    Oh, wait, I was.

So, to steer back on topic: I had a read through the thread to see what the hell I was posting in, and, damn, you guys are brutal. I didn't think this stuff was terrible. Overpriced, yes, and biting off more than you're entitled to, yes, but not as worthless as everyone here seemed to think.

Also, I don't really follow the "ugly" scene, so when I saw those decks I thought the portrayed the work of more established artists. I, mean, if you're going to do something like that, why not go all the way? I guess it's who ya know? Not complaining, though.

Google sucks for Zorlac references- they did so many variants I doubt anyone including Jeff actually knows the complete catalog.

Back on topic Violence Toy decks look pretty tight

    :(

I think actually have a pic of my Dance With Me deck somewhere. Never really thought to take picks of random objects like my Zorlac deck, though.

Kind of weird that it seems there's been a change of tide on perception of VT in these few pages.

I come from the internet. You gettin' paranoid or something?

Any particular reason you disagree with my statement? Or am I just supposed to believe you 'cause you're my dad?

EDIT: Also, don't know if you noticed, but I tagged you in the What You Got In The Mail That Isn't A Vinyl Toy thread, to thank you for directing me to ebay for the Charon fig I purchased.

Reread this thread from the top and haven't seen any of the outspoken critics recant their words... so I don't think that statement is accurate. Personally didn't care for these toys (or brand) when they debuted and that hasn't changed in the slightest.

Side note: missing the outspoken criticism that defined SB1.0... hasn't been a good dose of that in recent history

Having had the privilege of speaking with Deer Man of Dark Woods and receiving a goodie box from him a few years ago when I was still creating bootlegs, this is unbelievably badass. So great. Heroin Skateboards makes PRIME stuff. I wear their madball shirt with pride.

I guess that's debatable. I was commenting on the fact that the comments went from nearly blanket condemnation with virtually no positive feedback, to nearly blanket positive feedback with no condemnation, not that anyone'd necessarily changed their mind (as so rarely happens). And I did qualify my statement that it "seemed" there'd been a change, not that there'd actually been one, so I think I'm in the clear. Plus these folks offering praise weren't doing that at the start of the thread, thought they were members at that point. So there's that.

I am somewhere between annoyed and amused that their instant hypez-by-association tactics seem to have worked on more than one person, I don't care for the makers attempting to co-opt VHS cool with their packaging, I am unsurprised that they would attempt to cut in line with the skate world as well and, most importantly, I continue to dislike these sculpts - they still read to me as half-baked first drafts of an attempt to copy other successful ideas as rendered while ignoring the teacher during 4th period. I also know that it doesn't matter what I think, and will do my letter best to not judge those that see something different in this particular business venture. Lorb knows I've never made a toy.

    Is that better?

This post saddens me so much.

It's not that you don't like the sculpts. Fine, there are some things that get praise around here I don't get at all. Different strokes.

It's that you treat these guys like they're fucking Vice Presidents of Sofubi at Wal-Mart.

I've met them both. They're cool guys. Tattoo artists that just want to make cool shit. One of them runs Middle of Beyond. They put out cool themed rugs, blankets, and even Christmas ornaments. Hell, they're the kind of people that would post here: fans of the hobby that have taken a far more active role. Sure, they aren't your fit, but other people with very similar stories are.

That being said, treating people by default as some sort of scene-hyping dickheads trying to co-opt your "thing" is just...not a way I would ever want to live.

"hypez-by-association"? Maybe you're reading way too much into this and the answer is much simpler: people are enjoying the hobby painting these toys they like that you don't and you sound like a grumpy old man spraying his hose at children right now.

I think you are reading too much into it, Chris. Everyone here is free to like what they like, and anyone else is also free to dislike those same things. Expressing opinions from either camp is completely fine, and what the open discourse of this board is all about. If anyone is coming in to the hobby not to have any critique or only just to be cheerleaded and have fluff blown up their coattails, then that is fine too I suppose, but really since the whole intent of this place is public discussion, being against any kind of dissenting viewpoint is really not going to add much in the way of furthering posts here.

I just imagined old Italian men in white tank tops spraying each other with hoses. My god I need to eat something, my brain is fried.

I'm totally fine with the negative comments on the toys, but "hype by association"? Is that really necessary?

I think you made some valid points, btw. I mean, you guys obviously disagree, but you're both disagreeing intelligently, so I can't agree with @ultrakaiju that what you're arguing is "not going to add much in the way of furthering posts here". Vive la différence!
