I felt sure that this question had been asked here before- indeed, a search revealed this 2013 thread. Helpful, but I figured I would start a new thread to get the latest and greatest. I will be in Austin (my first time) for one long weekend in May. I have a couple friends in the city, and it's a bachelor party/reunion of friends weekend, and (under the guidance of a trio in the group who live in Austin) there is already a developing agenda of food and drink. I will also have some free time on Friday and Monday. Please recommend away, skullbrain! Thang kew in advance!
Mondo is located there and I know that you said food and drinks are in the works, but you really do have to at least go to either Salt Licks or Franklins for BBQ if you care for that sort of thing
Franklins BBQ is going to require a good 2-3 hour wait, so keep that in mind. Check out the Museum of the Weird. Loved that place.
Salt Lick BBQ is a must. The domain is a nice place to walk around and do a little shopping. Barton Springs and Hamilton Pool are awesome spots if weather permits. Also Guzu Gallery is a good place to check out toywise.
THANKS, all! Kay, I DO indeed care for that sort of thing, as does the whole crew... BBQ is in the plan, but where we'll go I'm not sure yet. Franklins has of course come up, but given the long wait and all we'll be tryoing to pack into the weekend, I'm not sure that's where we'll go. There is talk of a slight road trip out of town for BBQ. Kevin, swimming at Hamilton Pool is on the agenda already and I'm PSYCHED, as that place looks freakin' WONDROUS. Hope we get some good swimming weather! Museum of The Weird and Guzu added to my free-time days; I also just checked into booking a massage and float tank session for early Friday. BAAAAAATS!!!
If you run out of time there's also a Salt Lick at the Austin Airport, it's past the security zone. And for $65 they'll wrap up an entire brisket for you to bring home on the plane.
@ungawa222 How was your trip? We're headed out there at the end of the month. Would appreciate it if you had any tips above and beyond what was listed in the two threads.
My trip was enjoyable, though I did not get as much free/exploring time as I thought I might. Ate some great meals out, though I don't recall the names of all the places... though really, it seems you can't throw a stone in that city without hitting great eats. Did not make it to Museum of The Weird, but did pop into Guzu, which was a'ight. They had a little selection of (Godzilla-heavy) JP vinyl stuff, some US indie stuff. Got a Madball for my daughter. Went to the Broken Spoke honky tonk one night, and that was a trip- great people watching, remarkable environment that's been pretty much unchanged for decades, and the music that night was good. As essentially Texas an experience as you could hope for. No swimming happened, as it just wasn't warm enough most of the time I was there. Saw a movie at Alamo Drafthouse, a good experience even if the movie wasn't that great, and goddamn do I wish we had a theater like that near me. Funny enough, I did get to go to the Salt Lick stand in the airport (near the live stage) twice, as my first flight back was abruptly cancelled, so I had to go back the next afternoon. Best airport food you'll ever have, hands down. Have fun!!
