What are the striped things on his legs? Are those the tops of buildings? Cool as always with this company.
They are supposed to be smoke stacks emitting smoke. I'm really shocked at how many people love this. The top portion looks great but the smoke stacks look terrible especially where the leg joints are. It creates a really disjointed look. I don't get why he didn't just have the smoke stack tips end at the top of the leg joint?
Ugh!!!! Now this colorway I do not like. That first proto photo Choon posted worked much better (for me). I guess what is not harmonizing is/are: 1) the (in my opinion) overuse of the yellow/green/blue mixture (this has been prevalent in more than a few recent Elegab colorways); and 2) the colors against a good deal of exposed gray. The colors are just not in harmony. I looked at my color wheel--something just didn't seem right--and yellow/green/blue/red is already pushing the boundary of "not going together", but against the gray it does not harmonize. Even with my canvas painting, I recognize that unless you have a really minimalist palate, too much gray tends to just muddy the piece, and makes it look drab. (Note: one good use of exposed gray/gray tone, is how Gargamel did the 5th Anniversary Zagoran. Very limited palate--the bullet-colored gray blends well into a light purple; and accented perfectly with green (in the "guts") and a yellow eye. Perfect.) Picture for reference:
It's a little too garish, but I like the ideas. I think there's too much color in the smoke, especially around the belly, and the overlapping sprays are what's making it muddy. I would rather have more grey vinyl exposed, with slightly toned down sprays, like a Hedorah figure. Let the smoke stacks be the brightest color trim, and just pull back on the heaviness of the color sprays. Especially the blue.
Pic from Kadomiumtank's report of the Billiken Gallery event for Imiri shows the Smog King in a different light: Like it this way a lot.. EDIT: this other pic further down the page is better, but I am curious why Nari calls it King Gozera.. either way, I love this figure.
Looks like a neat exhibit. Seeing it there, I definitely prefer the darker colored Smog King. I wonder if we'll see both versions... he usually offers a couple paint versions these days.
The dark smoke stacker is pretty sick. Totally pulls off the look of smoke with it. Pretty amazing!!!!
the sculpt is really great, I wouldn't mind an unpainted. I like the darker version more than the blue. But it's hard for the paint to bother me on such an awesome sculpt.
I really like this darker version, but I still think the smokestacks should fade or something. But I like the brown/silver on gray--very nice!
i'm going to cross my fingers with the others that we'll see a color way close to the one off. but really this guy is so awesome it makes very little difference to me. and yeah, great interview.... more props to onwi for all his efforts.
So, has anybody seen the 4th figure from the group shot? The one behind the Tonneran, next to the Seijin? Looks different, but maybe it's just me.
I was going to complain that it's Comic Con week, but at least the deadline's not for a while. Will have to scrounge up the cash for the dark version. The Unpaints are cool as well... crap.
With these inching up toward the $150 mark with shipping, it's getting tougher. Maybe the yen will drop a bit before payment time. Still I can't resist. It's the painted Dark Grey Version for me.
