I first ran across this term recently regarding the vinyls in the Morphy's catalog --- Has this term been used for a while now and I've only recently become aware of it? Is this a term from the designer vinyl "scene"? What happened to "color variation," or "red version," "blue version," etc? ; ) Please enlighten me.
I think that's primarily an art term, which would explain why we've seen it in usage more since the advent of designer toys. I thought we talked about this last weekend....
Ha! Like *I* made it up! My understanding is that it goes beyond just "color scheme". It includes the type/color of the vinyl, inserts...whatever can distinguish one toy from another of the same sculpt.
I never knew myself, I just use it in reference to a combination of colors that can be attached to a source. Like the "pink Bullmark colorway" or something. I have never thought about the terms source though. Sounds all "graphic designery" to me so I guess it makes sense.
The term "colorway" originally came from the textile industry (starting about 50 years ago) and designer toy folks latched onto it. I hate it. I also hate "paint apps," (which is a misinterpretation of "paint ops," short for "paint operations," which I also hate).
My understanding is that when the manufacturer bills the client, they call them "paint operations," not "paint applications."
So would "theme" be better I guess for a familiar paint job in triubte to some source? I like it more and it's less crap to type. Screw it, I'm done, "theme" it is. Even "version" is way too many sylables and letters.
If you want one word, you could use "colored." No negative associations with that word whatsoever. ;p
i use the term paint app when i'm talking about a custom usually. colorway does sound pretty lame, yet i find myself using it from time to time. i think maybe it should be something along these lines: "gargamel x super7 x clear orange x solid black x wal-mart pipe cleaners"
What colorway..er...app...er....theme.....ere.......shit......colorthemeappwayscheme is your lawn? I wanna paint my new "art" toy it to sell more since people will conect with it and I can say "yeah, I'm OG d00ds, I know that lawn theme is tight!"
Colorway is a very common term in the design industry. It is used in Apparel and Footwear almost exclusively in reference to each color spec. I have been using it for 17 years. eh are we really that worried about it?
