Just wanted to pass this along for those in FL. At the Morikami Museum in Delray Beach there is a Kaiju toy show running from now until October. The show is a mix of vintage and new kaiju. Worth checking out if you are in the area. They didnt allow photography so these were taken on the DL. I have more on my Flickr if anyone cares.
That is awesome - thank you for posting! Didn't find anything on their website. Did they say who the collection was from? Is that Ultraman or something playing in the background? Very cool. Checking out your Flickr page right now.
The collection is on loan from Jim Levy (I think he might be a board member as well). For some reason they dont have it on their website. Yeah that is Ultraman playing in the background good eye.
Got some updates. They're working on website, FB, etc. updates, but until then: Also, a youtube short here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4_xh22kNK-U What would be good to see is an S7FL affiliated blogger out there to pick this up, connecting to their blog and presser so that they get 1st props, but then connecting it to S7 with a profile of this Dr. Levy for full effect. Just an idea. I've got no pony in this race, so whatev.
Thanks for the share! What an incredible assortment of toys. I think I love the Kamen Rider villains best though. So, lucky stop on your part or planned visit?
Good to see a budding South Florida contingency of toy collectors. Despite being so damned close to this exhibit, I'll likely only be stopping in later in the year for a purported special event (more details to come).
Just stopped by the MaxToy site and saw this... "06/14/10 - Mark Nagata to speak at Morikami Museum in Florida this October" And check out the June 14th entry from Mark's blog.
Alright, let's plan a trip down for October. I've been wanting to get back down South to hit the velodrome, so this works for me. Kaiju and track time = Win Win!
Yep - that's what I was referring to. Glad to see a date set and publicized. Looking forward to attending, but October is soooo far away!
New info on the Morikami site: http://support.morikami.org/site/Calend ... &id=103241 Join Mark Nagata, owner of the largest collection of Ultraman toys outside of Japan and founder of Max Toy Company, and Professor James B. Levy, a longtime collector of Japanese vinyl toys, as they talk about the influence of Japanese movie studio characters like Godzilla and Ultraman on American audiences. They will highlight the myriad of vinyl toys in these shows spawned in the 60s and 70s and their discovery decades later by collectors worldwide who appreciate them for their fantastic designs and artistry. While these toys were originaly mass produced as inexpensive children's playthings, years later they are being appreciated in an entirely different context as beautiful objects reflecting the vanishing art of Japanese toy making. Both Mr. Nagata and Professor Levy will share how they first discovered these wonderful toys, their passion for collecting them and explain the influence these toys are having on artists and toymakers around the world. Cost: $10 (Members $7) Speaker: Professor James B. Levy and Mark Nagata Museum's Cornell Café will be closed. Doors open at 6pm. Advance registration for lectures is required. Tickets will be held at the door. Date: Wednesday, October 6, 2010 Time: 7:15 PM If you'd like to attend this event you can purchase tickets online. So who is going to show up?
Well no talks have been going on about this in sometime, so I will bring it back up because it's under a month away. Who all is going to the Oct. 6th event? http://support.morikami.org/site/Calend ... &id=103241 If anyone whats to meet up before the start of the show lets plan something out. I'm sure a few of us from south Florida will be showing up.
Yeah, you know I'm down (assuming nothing pops up - I've got some work commitments which might take me out of town, but the timing of these is still up in the air).
Less than two weeks away! T, are you planning on getting in town early enough to join the group beforehand? Or were you planning on an "after-party" gathering since it starts kinda early, Jordan? Anyone see if Mark or Jim are free too?
I don't have Mark or Jim's contact info.. Guess I can message Mark Via twitter. We could find a place to eat in the Boca area or if someone has something else in mind let me know. Would be cool if we could make a plan. Let me know if you have any ideas Kingboy D.
Not sure if we will be able to arrive early or stay late as I'm catching a ride with Mr. & Mrs. ksamdesign.com ..... but, at least I will be there! This should be mandatory attendance for all FLASKers.
I have bought my online tickets. This event is one week after my feets have had bunionectomy surgery. I am really hoping that the pain will be manageable at that time. I will be in a wheelie chair if I am there. But I REALLY want to be there!
