Re: i remember a few people talking about bikes.
I got this bike a couple months back but just got around to putting it together. Swapped out the down-tube shifters for bar-end shifters. Also need to get a longer seat post. Oh, and still need to figure out what color I want to wrap the bars. I'm leaning towards green, or mottled red/white/green.

Nice score NT! Such a big frame. You must be pretty tall. What group are you running on it?

It has old Shimano 600 RD, cassette, chain rings, brakes & hubs, Dura Ace FD and shifters (I just took off the 600 DT shifters), and the headset is Campy. Not sure what the BB is. Oh, and the rims are NOS Mavic MA40s. I'd been looking for a Ciöcc for a while and got this for a pretty great price on eBay. Finding one in my size and price took a while - but mid-winter is the perfect time to find a new bike for not much money! Now is NOT a good time to try to find a good deal on a Ciöcc pantographed seat post. But over time I hope to find all the pantographed components to put on her.

I'd kill for a road bike but the roads round here just aren't suitable...neither is my style of riding. Here's my 2 whips.

Very nice build! Glad you didn't get carried away with getting colored components. My brother has those dildo handlebars also.

Mike Like Bike wrote: dildo handlebars Mike, you're using them wrong! Those forks are extremely vivid; combined with the teal and the matching hold fast straps, I wanted to keep the rest of it understated. I'm rocking 32's a bro had but I am going to see if I can fit some 40's or 45's on there soon. I went with metal Hamilton pedals and I think I should have just went plastic but these things are beast. Fudge me, that freestyle gearing is a PITA on hills though. I chose the Chukker over the Deep V since my chubbiness doesn't bode well for my spokes.

Re: i remember a few people talking about bikes.
I thought I'd dig up this thread as I'm looking to buy a bike for the first time in 20 years I want something to cruise around town and go on short rides (less than 10 miles). It will mostly be used on pretty well paved (hilly) roads. I'm interested in the Orbea Carpe or the Jamis Allegro Sport and want to stay in the $600 range. Any suggestions?

Re: i remember a few people talking about bikes.
600.00 is good, would you guys recommend craigslist bikes? Got my wife a Townie and she hates it... so it looks like i'll be looking for another bike for her. while searching i came across Shinola. Anyone have any experience with them? http://www.shinola.com/shop/bicycles/the-runwell-bicycle.html for that price, they'd better be perfect.

trueadrn wrote: would you guys recommend craigslist bikes? Yup - especially in Portland. I don't know what size you ride, but my buddy was just posting about this sweet deal (not my buddy's bike, he just saw it on CL): http://portland.craigslist.org/mlt/bik/3747314094.htmlI got my commuter off of CL for $200. Steel, lugged mid-80s Fuji. I've replaced a lot of parts over time, but $200 should get you a good start, or $400-500 for something that doesn't need any upgrading. That Shinola looks pretty nice, but not for that price. You should be able to get something custom built to your exact specs for that much. And if I was getting a bike like that Shinola, and spending that much, it'd be belt-driven. Might be selling my wife's bike - it's one of these Globes built by Specialized:

Re: i remember a few people talking about bikes.
^ that is gorgeous
would CL be the best place to sell a bike in portland? I'm going to have to get rid of her Townie before I get her a new bike, she complained that it was too heavy, slow. Not sure where i'm going next.

That's what I would do - now seems like it'd be the perfect time to sell too, what with the beautiful weather and summer right around the corner. Prices are higher in the summer and lower in the winter, so you'll get the best price for it nowish. I bought my "summer bike" in the winter and got it for about $300-400 less than it would have sold for in the summer.

Re: i remember a few people talking about bikes.
Shinola is made Waterford who kicks ass. The prices are a bit high though. Check out the Orange One by Milwaukee Bikes, you can get rack mounts and even a belt drive compatible frame for a lot less. http://www.benscycle.net/index.php?main ... h=612_1546You could get a Alfine 11 speed complete for $1519 plus frame and that is there top groupo.
