Hey, now that we have that Youtube button...

Dream, by Organ-o-rounge, animation by Hiroshi Matsumoto. The music starts about 1min. into the video.

I was going to say it might be a good idea to keep the funny videos to the other thread, but this is actually an amazing song!

That one's goofy. But I legit love the Jonzun Crew's more breakdance-ish stuff.

I feel like, when I watch that video, anyone involved except for the singer is totally just like "Oh man...just get it over with and pay me." I also feel like old people who watched this back when it aired just assumed that's how all music videos were and it's no wonder they hated them.

On the contrary, I will only be posting awful songs / videos followed by an awesome one to cleanse the palate. First up (and what a doozie it is)... It makes my blood boil yet I can't stop watching. The epitome of a musical train wreck.

Then we have a killer d'n'b track. I don't listen to much electronic music anymore, but this was my jam as a teenager who thought anything Japanese sans anime was automatically cool.

^ oli (and james), you've opened some very dangerous doors here.

You're attractive, little witch, you're beautiful. (Beautiful)
Your wickedness, little witch, it broke my heart. (I Broke your heart)
Enchanting words, little witch, you've cast a spell. (I Cast my spell)
Masked destroyer, little witch, my beautiful apocalypse.

You got me bewitched, 'cause I'm under your spell, Ohhh.
You must be a witch, 'cause I am living in Hell, Ohhh.
Now is the time, now is the hour.
I am the magic, I am the power, oh.
All I need is one star in the sky, wish for you every night.

I tricked you to fall in love, little boy.
I played with you 'til I was done, like a toy. (Like a toy)
Hard in love as I destroy the end of you. (The end of me)
So easily fooled, little boy, to think it's true. (I'm in love with you)

Now is the time, now is the hour.
To take back my heart, to take back my power.
This is the moment to break your spell.
I see right through you,
Now burn in Hell.
(You're gone)

Now is the time, now is the hour.
To take back my heart, to take back my power.
This is the moment to break your spell.
I see right through you,
Now burn in Hell.
(So long)

Now is the time, now is the hour.
To take back my heart, to take back my power.
This is the moment to break your spell.
I see right through you...
(Burn in Hell, witch!)

You got me bewitched, 'cause I'm under your spell, Ohhh.
You must be a witch, 'cause I am living in Hell, Ohhh.
Now is the time, now is the hour.
I am the magic, I am the power, Ohhh.
All I need is one star in the sky, wish for you every night.

I really, really want to like Bowie's new stuff, but I am just not feeling it. The two tracks I've heard thus far feel hollow and strained. Bowie's voice is not aging as well as he is. The material sounds more of someone who is bored rather than someone trying to break new ground (from an artist who has ALWAYS broken new ground). This, of course is just my opinion on hearing the only two tracks I have so far. Maybe after listening to the entire album I'll have a change of mind. But as many say, always put your best foot forward and if these two tracks are any indication, he should just stay quiet and live off of Iman's money on some island somewhere, sipping rum drinks. I'd respect him more for that than all of this.

I posted the Bowie video because it's a good music video. It's certainly not the strongest listen on the new album, but again, the video is a decent short movie with a lot to say about celebrity from the perspective of someone who's been hiding from it for over ten years. Very few recording artists attempt anything so ambitious or meaningful with their promo videos. While there's no way new Bowie music could compare to his accomplishments of the '70s, part of the current message is that he's not even trying and would rather be evaluated for what he's doing now on its own terms. I can't think of another 66 year old classic rocker who could do as well as "The Next Day," a perfectly respectable album. Just don't go comparing it to "Ziggy Stardust" because, well, there's no comparison, nor any real point to the comparison.

I'm not comparing it to anything he's done in the past, rather comparing it to an artist who has been an ideal artistic chameleon with usually incredible results at every turn. That being said, I think my critique fits perfectly in line with what you said (and Bowie, if that's really what he's asking the listener to do). As to videos themselves, I have never been one to give them much credence as they tend to be the residual marketing product from the label rather the artist. That's not at all to say the artist isn't directly involved in the music video, as I'm sure Bowie was/is. However, unless Bowie wrote the video material and was instrumental in the complete development in it, then there were/are separate individuals involved that can never align themselves with where the artist is going since people can't completely assimilate afterall. Again, this is just my opinion.

... carry on

The initial inspiration for the video came from Jean-Luc Godard's Rolling Stones documentary for Sympathy for the Devil. Adam and I loved the exploratory visual style, omnisciently floating through the live room where the Stones germinate a single lick into one of their most recognizable songs. We understood that to reference this in a three minute video we would need to take some fantastical steps by blocking the action in a theatrical way. This offered the second revelation, which was to present the video as an infinite loop, one-take video, which just felt perfect for the nature of the song's construct. Toronto-based art director Adam Belanger helped us with the visualization of a Spector-esque wall of sound studio construction, and the pieces fell together from there. We couldn't be more excited to share this project with July Talk's dedicated fan base.

While the music doesn't do much for me for this song, the music video is pretty great for some classic 80s style anime tribute.

I love the videos that Shynola puts out. I hope they eventually they put out a DVD with works from Shynola, similar to what they did for Spike Jones, Michel Gondry, Jonathan Glazer, Chris Cunningham, etc.
