As some of you know I have been in the process of making my first vinyl toy. I got word a few days ago that the first test pulls are done and are on the way in for some final inspections. I have been wanting to start a thread here for some time but decided to hold back until it was 100% So now that its final and just about finished I would like to share with you the "Sludge Demon" from my toy company "Mutant Vinyl Hardcore". This is a huge dream come true for me and I couldn't be happier. Check out some shots of the original sculpt, which I'm proud to say I sculpted 100% And for size reference (** The comparison shot was taken before the sculpt was 100% finished, so you may notice some changes in the final sculpt **) I do understand that this may not be for everybody, so no hard feelings if you down right hate it. I'm itching to paint this guy right now, I have some great paint ideas planned for ol sludgie and cant wait to share them with you all. I will keep all info and updates posted in this thread so its easy to find and wont clutter up the board. More to come soon, I hope you guys enjoy.
are there 2 pieces to the mold? or will it just be one piece with a plug? it looks like the bottom is movable. the face is very realistic. good job.
Its s 2 piece design jointed in the center. I wanted go hide the joint and so that the figure can swivel.
Love the organic flow of the stuff coming off of the head and sides. Really suggestive of movement. I'll clear a spot in my case for one of these. It's a winner.
really cool rich! the details in the sculpt really shine through on the top/sides where the sludge and the head converge size and articulation style remind me of cronic's dorogami , the similarities stop there though
I think this is the best original toy to be developed by a skullbrainer. Especially for a debut sculpt. Great job Rich. It looks like you have a really promising future in toy design.
Rich it's nice to see Sludge Demon finally come to fruition after all your hard work. You really did a stellar job on this one. Now the fun begins with the painting. Can't wait to see the results.
Stellar work on the sculpting Rich. This thing has such a rhythmic flow to it and so natural when it transitioned to the face. Your paint work will make this look magnificent! I hope I can land one when it comes out! hint, hint
Thanks for the articulated kind words everyone. It seems my ideas where very clear to you all. Its nice when your ideas translate well into sculpt @ W_C the Cronic Dorogami was definitely an inspiration design wise. With the character I created the joint at the waist was just perfect. Good eye
i think my favorite detail on this piece is how the globs of flowing flesh/slime are re-inforced by the buddha-esque fat earlobes that hang down. this piece feels like its got more of a style made popular by anime/manga, whereas ollie seems like a harryhausen figure. in juxtaposition, your two new toys reflect really well on your interests as a fan and as an artist, while also amplifying your skill set's diversity. pretty much all WIN all day for Mutant Vinyl Hardcore. soon, we can all quit our day jobs.
Fantastically sculpted!!! That last shot (before the size ref shot) really shows off your sculpting chops! And the face ain't too shabby either! V-Color me impressed.
Originally Ollie was supposed to have two different heads sculpts. One was going to be the head that is my logo, and the second head was gonna be a Buddha head. Through out the process plans changed and I ended up doing a head inspired by one of my illustrations. I still really wanted to do something with the Buddha head though. Now, in the off time through out sculpting Ollie I stared a figure which I wanted to look very organic. As I was sculpting the body and all the blobs where forming it really just hit me, this would be perfect for that Buddha head idea. Once I sculpted in on and it was just perfect and totally made the figure. The fat ear lobes of the head really do tie in well with the rest of the body and really pull the entire figure together. I would LOVE to do this full time, I would quit my job in a quick minute
I normally favor more "traditional" kaiju and robots, but I actually dig this. It's got a VERY yokai vibe to it, and I've always had a soft spot for yokai. Damn atease...he's got me watching the new Kitaro cartoon!
Flawless execution. I agree with those that have commented on the motion in the sculpt, very well done. I can't wait to see some of these with some paint on them. I'm grossing myself out imagining one painted to look like a realistic, lumpy, gooey mass of flesh. Nice work, Rich.
congrats rich, the sculpting is superb. i can't wait for this to come out, as well as ollie. i would love to pick up both.
That's one great sculpt and it seems to carry a lot of detail considering it's size. Bring on the vinyl !
