there was celluloid . saw this up for auction and thought i would share . a wolf thats getting ready to eat a poor little piggy . now thats my kinda toy !
Some people here already knew about celluloid toys. I had heard about them but didn't really know what they were. And besides, in Mexico they're called sololoy (or sololoi) pure phonetic translation. Which made all very confusing. So I was walking around some antiques stores in Puebla (a nearby city) and found this amazing looking doll. SOme kind of cat I thought. Or a dog? Or phetus... or what? I still don't know what it is!! SO I bought it. It turned out it's made out of celluloid and ended up buying two more toys. There were a bunch of them but not really in good condition. These supposedly go back to the 1920s. I find them extremely interesting and beautiful. I hope to find more in the near future. Here's my pic. There's another thread for celluloid toys but didn't really have photos viewtopic.php?f=17&t=5752&hilit=celluloid
Just saw recently on NHK a craftsman in Japan that is still making celluloid toys. Was pretty cool to see. Mostly dolls but cool nonetheless
same reason old film stock was such a fire hazard (and partly to blame for so few original prints surviving), a la 'inglourious basterds'... django reinhardt lost his fingers to a celluloid induced fire - his wife was making artificial flowers out of it in their gypsy wagon. which worked out fine, i suppose, since he became one of the greatest guitar players who ever lived because of that accident. i digress...
