    Thanks! :)

I won't be doing a lot of these, but here's some WIP pics of my Alien Argus for the upcoming TAG show. Still a lot to go, so the next time I post pics there will be more to look at :)

Since the postcards are out and the full previews are starting to make their way around the blogs, I figured I'd share another small WIP pic. Finished with the airbrushing for the most part this weekend, this week I'll be doing brushwork to finish him up.

What paints are you using that you have to sit and stop after every individual paint app?

Re: Troy Stith's Customs *Alien Argus WIP* (2/14/11)

I'm using acrylics, so I never really have to stop and wait because most of the time I'm quick setting the paints with a hairdryer. It really boils down to the fact that I'm working on multiple things at once and I've been doing a little work on each one throughout the weeks. I've also been very choosy about what colors I want to apply so that has slowed me down a little as I mix and match before applying any paint. Also what these pics don't translate too well is that there is a micro pearl coat over the white, another layer of silver in certain areas to pop the metallic look more, then the colors applied over those select areas. The green also has a micro pearl in the paint as well. I know there is only 3 colors in this pic, but it'll all come together with the other colors I've applied that you don't see and the brushwork I'll be doing ;) I took this pic when I was applying a protective gloss coat layer before starting in with my brushes.

Re: Troy Stith's Customs *AntArgus* (2/19/11)

I know this was a long drawn out process, but it's finally time to reveal my Alien Argus custom "AntArgus" for the Toy Art Gallery show. My winter hiking adventures definitely contributed to my inspiration for this custom. There were a lot of natural fades going on in the ice that I wanted to translate into this piece.

Re: Troy Stith's Customs - Chaosman WIP (3/28/11)

Started on this Chaosman last night for Kaiju for Japan. I've always liked the head on Chaosman, but his body needed a makeover imo.

Post Surgery. There's details that you can't see in this pic ;) more to come.

    Great stuff.
Troy, how do you like working with the Invisible Gloves?
I use fully visible gloves ( :D ); I've been intrigued by IG-type products but haven't yet tried...

Re: Troy Stith's Customs - Chaosman WIP (3/28/11)

For sure! I really like Invisible Glove. Once applied it makes washing off the epoxy easy, plus I don't have to worry about it soaking into my skin. The only thing you have to pay attention to is if you get your hands wet a lot while working. If you do you'll have to reapply to those areas to ensure that it's still there.

Here's a peek at the details going on on the back. I wanted to incorporate the insect/reptile/organic look I'm using on my Glyos custom, but I'll also be incorporating design details from his head into the body as well. I'm really looking forward to getting back to work on him tonight. I was out of commission all day yesterday due to dental work.

Since this is for Kaiju for Japan, I figured I'd show all the WIP pics along the way. Here's last night's progress.

Started in on the larger details on the front last night, plus filled in more of the back and arm. Still a lot of work to go, but he's starting to come together.

Re: Troy Stith's Customs - Chaosman WIP (4/5/11)

Hmmm...you gotta be careful when sculpting onto these toys. In some cases it totally works and can look fantastic but in others, it comes off looking really "tacked-on" and sort of out of place. You have to consider not only how well the additions are sculpted but how well they work with the figure as a whole.

I can't really tell if this one is going to work for me yet. I like that you're going out on a limb and I like that you're trying to add some texture to the body with the sculpting, I'm just not sure if I like what you've sculpted and where you've placed it.

Keep working it and posting pics. It'll come together more once you add paint. I'm interested to see how this one turns out. 8)

Re: Troy Stith's Customs - Chaosman WIP (4/5/11)

Thanks for the input Dustin, really appreciate it! I definitely know what you mean by "tacked-on" sculpting. Although I'm new to the Kaiju scene, I've done quite a few western vinyl customs and the same "tacked-on look" applies in that arena as well. I'm hoping to avoid that look in the end. I know he looks kinda all over the place right now, but that's mostly bc I've been working in sections on him with the epoxy. Mostly to avoid smashing minute details while working other areas and also to block out some of the bigger sculpts before going back in with smaller details. As far as the placement goes, his entire body will be covered in sculpt/texture in the end. I really like the head on the Chaosman, but the body always left me wanting more of that great texture up top. So I've decided to put my own spin on the body while leaving the head untouched. We'll see how that plan holds up after I get the rest of the body sculpted and I get the head back in place. Either way, I'll keep pushing forward! Thanks again :)

I'll be sculpting like crazy tonight and tomorrow to get this thing done, then I should be painting by this weekend if all goes as planned. Running behind, but those minuscule details make for slow work. More to come.

Re: Troy Stith's Customs - Chaosman WIP (4/19/11)

    Haha thanks dude!

I was really really hoping to knock out all of the sculpting last night, but once the clock hit 3am I had to get some sleep for work today. I'll knock out the right foot tonight right after work, then paint like a madman tomorrow to get this done for the Kaiju for Japan sale. Then I've gotta switch gears to make sure everything is ready for the Vinyl Roots show. Going to be a very busy and tiring month.
