To take a photo that tight on a digital camera, especially one that has any kind of auto focus, you need macro. |

Yep, if it's an autofocus, use macro if it has that. If it doesn't have macro, looks like you were just too close - most show some light in the viewfinder to tell you focus is OK or too-close. Just back up some and if you end up with too much white-space around the toys, use Irfanview to crop the image down after it's in your computer. |

It is set to macro. I think it's a combination of not having the manual and my non-surgical steadiness. ....and I was pretty close
The camera is a Vivitar Vivicam 3660s. Its a pretty simple point and shoot til I get a better camera. Having never really used a camera, it will take me a bit of learning to get used to one. I might get a little flexible tripod to help with the steadiness. 
The downside is that now I have a camera which mean I might start taking pix of some of the toys I've got. |

Yeah, just buy a good tripod. Half of your photos will come out blurry in macro mode- especially if you're trying to take weird, artsy up-close photos of toys. 
Another tip is to use the automatic timer when you put the camera on the tripod. That takes out the possibility of your hand shaking when you hit the shutter button. |
