When these were first shown on this board someone said they thought they were sacreligious. I had some ideas on thinking about that. One is that Japan is not a Christian nation and that the context isn't the same. Also, the crucifix was not a torture/execution device invented specifically for Jesus. We in the west often use images of the Buddha or other various religious icons, e.g. the t'ai chi or "yin/yang symbol" in contexts that are our own, not the original. It's not intended disrespectfully, just differently.

A Christian who had issues with the use of the cross here might also have objections to the Ultra mythos even without the cross. Ultraman is basically a god entity that took up residence in a man's body to fight evil on Earth. Some might find even that blasphemous. But then, there are Christians who think they Harry Potter mythos is evil, so perhaps "lighten up" is the best response.

Then again, this series is called "Golgotha" so the reference to the New Testament story is intentional. :-)

It is my first Madball Mantis. I don't LOVE him, but I don't hate him either. I like the way the glow is on the inside.

I want the Ultraseven in this set so bad! Way cool. My girlfriend is freaked out by it, cause it looks like sweet innocent Ultraman is being tortured. Makes me want it even more!

Comparing it to the other items nearby (and from what I remember of the pre-order email), the ultra himself is about 12" but with the cross, it's about 17-18" tall. Somewhat sacrilegious perhaps, but not grotesquely so - And happily, I bet the Christians of Japan will not be rioting in the streets or threatening the life of the creator.

Random useless factoid - Bizarrely, the English words 'religious' and 'sacrilegious' are completely unrelated words, they do not come from the same etymological root at all (thus the spelling difference). 'Sacrilegious' is from the same root as 'sacred.'
