So.. I've been on a tear on YJA persuing my new favorite toy brand... I've racked up the credit cards scoring pieces here and there for incredible deals so I decided to take a break from spending so I can recover... Then... I see her...

Image

I got her for 2800 yen + celga fees so around $50 bucks. I was going to wait until I uncrated the lot of my stuff but I had to show her off... They are so bizarre! I've seen them on here a few times before and knew if I ever saw one I'd need to get one for the collection... Any idea who makes these? I know they're from the Pachi Summits. Lastly there was a brunette available too, I dont think it got claimed and the seller is one of those guys with 100 pages in his acutions. The japanese characters for them are ペナンガラン happy hunting!

At first I was gonna tease you 'bout being into dolls now abe,but I can see
the appeal. The characters read Penangaran, japanese transliteration on Pennangalan, which is a type of vampire of Malaysian folklore that wears its guts on the outside-ish,which explains the look of the doll.

No clue who makes 'em though. But I'm startin to dig 'em. 8)

Yeah photos of these guys have made the rounds here a few times before. There's a set of Panaangs with flocked bodies... super cool stuff. I believe this kind of monster was also said to exist in the Phillipines under the name Berbalang.

There's a brunette version with the glitter body up right now if you're interested, I think it's the same seller, too (just do a search for パチサミ and it'll pop up half a page down). I'm 99% sure they are from this last Patchi Summit, and think they're made by AmaPro.

Can you tell I was thiiiiiiis close to putting a bid in on those? :)

I had to get just one... unless the flocked ones come up again ;)

Gotcha. I knew, on the other hand, that there was no way I could snag just one and leave it at that, so I had to make an executive decision to snag none at all.

Plus my wife said they were dumb.

The Malay creature is the same as the Filipino one known as the Manananggal which means remover. In the day time they are beautiful older women and then at night, the upper torso removes itself from the lower torso to feed on pregnant women. Fairly easy to kill if you know where the lower half is :).

I think its funny that here on skullbrain between all the skulls, bats, blood splatters, blopus, kaiju and assorted madness that these cute little anime girls are the only thing that has repeatedly scared all the big bad punk rockers ;)

That and Missy's Carol Channing Ventriloquist Dummy...

toy dolls i might add that is very possible you could see in PK's collection...

Btw, Abe, i haven't heard of berbalang? But indeed, this doll looks like what Bert has described as "manananggal"---a mythical character usually illustrated in books with gargoyle-like wings in its monster, or off the body state.

Same story goes for the manananggal---usually, the most beautiful woman in a community with a "killer" smile. Usually has a lot of admirers, she attacks at night and devour its victims.

There is also a creature called "aswang". It transforms into a beast-like creature in the middle of the night...with oily skin, red eyes and fangs, it hunts its midnight snack---preferably pregnant women. Other stories about it says it transforms into a huge black dog, sometimes a huge bird with claws.

Berbalang sounds like "tikbalang" to me--tikbalangs are half-man, half-horse more similar to a devil dog.

Pictures or sketches would be interesting, Bert might be able to post them here?

I had my monsters from the AD&D fiend folio mixed up. There was a dope picture in there tho of a demonic lady head with entrails and wings flying through the night sky. I dont have the book anymore, so I'll have to hit google to see if i can find it.
Thanks for the knowledge transfer all!

If we're gonna go down that path, how about a Mind Flayer vinyl

I am staying away from them. Those character are not fictional horror, they are true. I've heard many stories about their existence.

I grew up watching a lot of Indonesian horror movies when growing up. Nothing compares to the all the Japanese/HK/western horror.

Watching the movies is nothing compared to sitting down and listening to an old guy tell you stories of ghosts, the mananaggal, and the aswang. I've forgotten all those stories but the images of the creatures live forever in my memory. I do love folklore and mythology. I think creatures are really fun and interesting and I've always been curious about some of the toys that we buy and the stories behind them.

You don't need me to post pics. There should be a bunch on the interweb along with videos on youtube.
In case you guys haven't searched, here are some links to wiki:
Aswang
Manananggal
Tikbalang
You'll find that there are overlaps in different countries as far as folklore/mythology goes.
I was actually going to make a series of drawings based on folklore and mythological creatures. Too many ideas, not enough time...
