I thought this was pretty cool, figured some members might like the information as well.

I have seen people do this before, it works great for wide but short stuff (die cast planes, zoids and mothra)that you can not tier, not a big fan of using it were risers could be employed though

Not convinced myself. I think the big space allows you to view toys at the back of the shelf. Toys get lost in that cramped little space. Wastes more space in my eyes.

the U bolts are also good for running a line across and above your shelf for hangy stuff, never seen it done but this could add a diorama aspect to your shelf i.e. suspended planes or missiles flying around your kaiju

Interesting article, especially since I definitely have an over population problem in my detolfs. Looks kind of busy though. I'd screw it up and end up breaking mine I'm sure. Probably going to sneak across the border and just get another detolf sometime this fall. My girl will be thrilled to see that (not).

That's it, I am setting the Mounties on full alert! But really, are these not available in the US, or is it just a pricing thing? (rare is the occasion I have heard of cross-border shopping in this direction).

I'm pretty sure they can't ship Detolfs, so my guess is that Chris doesn't have an Ikea close to him.

I would assume a distance issue, I have an ikea in ohio but it is closer to drive to michigan or pennsylvania

Well the main issue is Buffalo sucks (although I hear we might get a Trader Joe's soon which I go ehhhh to- but whatever keeps the hipsters happy)

Yeah it's geography really. Buffalo is on the US/Canada border. Closest stateside Ikea- Pittsburgh which is not that close, or I can cross into Canada, go to the one in Burlington which is about 40 minutes away.

I have detolfs with other collections in them ... I used some good weight fishing line to sit shelves between

here is one with 2 extra shelves added ...

seems like acrylic shelves would probably be cheaper than glass.

That's hilarious...I love reading how cheap detolfs are overseas.....mine was AU$150 on special.
If I could get them for $65 I'd have 10. I know a big USA designer who has about 30 and he said he got his at a warehouse sale for 20 bucks each.
I called him a C-word.

i like this idea, to add a few more shelves per case, i wouldn't go crazy with it.

i'm gonna hit up ikea this weekend to see if i can find any extra shelves or soemthing useable in the AS IS section...

Great idea for Detolf owners!

Acrylic sheet would be way cheaper. It can be cut with a craft knife, the edges finished with wet & dry and polished and would also be lighter to support.

this is a pretty awesome idea for sure.

The only problem with using acrylic is unless its 3/8" thick it will probably sag. you can also flame the edge with a low flame on a torch and it will make the edge clear again.

Awesome idea. But I agree with a lot of people that toys get lost being all squished in like that, I'll stick with risers.

i had bought 4 detolfs from an LA owner at $20 a piece when he was moving... managed to break 2 shelves on the trip back up north... went to a local glass shop and they charged $10 to cut 2 new glass shelves... wasnt too bad. glass isnt that exspensive... but yeah i agree acrylic is cheaper.

Pretty cool. If I still had Detolfs, I'd be all over this because I always hated the gap but never got around to using risers.

They can -- When I bought my first two Detolfs, the closest IKEA at the time was in Orlando. Shipping was of course more expensive than the combined price of the two shelves, but whatever.

^ that's awesome. our ikea won't ship anything with glass components, not even after i offered to pay higher rates for insured & white-glove delivery service.
