Post subject:  Gumos from Max Toy Co Battle Pack

Hi all,
This is my custom kaiju Gumos, the second half of the Max Toy Co Battle Pack, which supplied the flesh Captain Maxx for my Maxx-vell custom. Painting this guy was alot different from painting the Captain Maxx figure, with much more freehand and much less guidelines. Everything's airbrushed except for the eyes, which were an experiment I did not know how would turn out. I painted the eyes a very dark silver, and then applied dots of much lighter (GW Mithril) silver in a semi-organized pattern. I then applied Tamiya Clear Red in a few thin coats, topped off with some Future for shininess, in an attempt to represent iridescent segmented compound insect eyes. Let me know what you guys think!

Dig the eyes. I think that's a great effect. The black shading on the joints also reminds me of the weathering on mecha/military kits shown in the hobby mags- more of a realistic feeling than a straight 'vintage' spray style. Always interesting to see other painting styles applied to kaiju vinyls.

One thing that bothers me a little, however, is the red lines over the small spines on the arms and legs- they seem a little bold, particularly on the legs. I don't know how you would avoid that, since I know it is a very small area to detail cleanly with an airbrush. The red accents on the spines are a nice touch overall though, very much like a crustacean or insect.

Thanks for the comments! I think I really am pretty pleased with how the eyes came out... even my parents were impressed when I showed them, and they usually just want to know why I don't spend more time studying or working

The black shading you're seeing is really just shadowing... the sculpt is awesome, and looks great from all angles. There's probably a little bit of overspray from the red colors on places like the main 'hips', but most of the shading in the pics is just a shadow. In brighter light my photos were too washed out to show any of the green shading.

I hear you on the spines... I had initially wanted them to be much less pronounced, with color going down each individual spine, and fading off before they all met the surface, but honestly it came down to my just not being good enough yet with the airbrush. I managed it mostly how I wanted on the front leg spines, but the side leg and arm ones were alot tougher. I did still work on toning them down more, by going back over all the spines with the green highlight color to blend them in, as before that, they REALLY stood out!

Ben that looks great! Really like the contrast between the raised red ridges and the glossy green surface. And yes, the eyes are excellent!

I never cared for this sculpt until I saw this. So cool!
