Ha, thanks for the comments. I am using Cel-Vinyl paints, and Johnson's (Pledge) Future Floor Wax as my gloss coat... applied in many fairy heavy layers to get that shine.

It's funny you mention the photo text font... I usually try to use something theme-appropriate (military stencils for tanks, something scary for a scary monster, etc) and I wanted something sort of planty or vine-ey, but the one I ended up picking is more brush-scripty than I realized. Maybe a little too classy for a giant potato monster

if by classy you mean awful, then i agree completely

does the floor wax leave it sticky at all?

What ever you do DONT get Windex on future wax , it will strip it off quickly.

Nope, it's basically just a clear acrylic, so it dries nice and smooth.

Rich, ammonia strips acrylic (assuming Future really IS acrylic--never used it myself)?? I thought acetone was the only really effective chemical that could do that...

Hey, Ben, been meaning to ask: do you coat the vinyl in Future before painting as well as after? And do you coat the inside too?

You may wanna try that (coating the inside and out before painting). Chinese vinyl has a porous surface due to it being roto- (not slush-) cast. A clear coat fills in the pores and returns that super-clear glossy sheen. You may get even better clarity if you coat the insides as well...

I considered coating the whole figure with Future before painting it... it definitely would have made it even clearer, but when I started trying out painting the figure, I found the paint was sticking really well.. probably for the same reason. Coating the inside probably would have helped alot as well, but I think I would have had trouble when I put the painted guts back in. I had to clean up a bunch of paint rubs after putting the bones in, and I think it would have made a much bigger mess to clean those up if the surface was all Future'd up.
