Very happy with the way this guy is coming along; should have him completed before the weekend's out. Total repaint, and I plugged in Glastic eyes; I gotta figure out how to take a really good, properly lit photo of him when he's done, to do justice to the coloration. I painted him a flat black, then slowly built up the colors by drybrushing lightened Payne's gray, turquoise, and cad yellow, topped off with Liquitex interference green, which just looks incredible and jewel-like against the black basecoat- really much richer than regular metallics. ![]() ![]() ![]() Not my pic, but here's what this toy looks like off the shelf: ![]() Thanks for looking! |

ZOMG WARHAEMMAR! Seriously, that looks fantastic. The Bandai sculpts just scream for this kind of attention. The eyes in particular are unreal, and really complement your paint work on the face. Is Glastic a kind of doll-eye? |

Thanks, guys! Yeah, Prometheum, Glastic is a brand of realistic doll eyes; I use those and another brand called Lifetouch, usually. Again, they're not done justice in the pic; I took it outside, and I think the plastic fogged up a little bit, so you can't see the detail of the irises (all the overcast daylight reflecting off the snow adds to the shot's general washed-out-ness and lack of pop, too). I buy all my eyes from this place- they're great to deal with: http://www.schoepferseyes.com/ |

Alright... couldn't stand the pic I had up, the more I looked at it... also, realized that my camera's lighting function was set to "tungsten", which was to blame for some of the washout. So I took a few more snaps, and plugged 'em in above... still not fully representative of all that's going on, color-wise, but much better than before. I should be able to post shots of the fully-finished toy by mid-week or so; decided today I want to fill his legs with plaster or putty for added stability, and I'm also going to plug tiny neodymium magnets into the soles of his feet, so I can sometimes stick him to the fridge at a 90 degree angle, for fun. |

Gave up the crazy-ass idea I had hinted at for this guy and simply finished him up for inclusion in Troy's sale; finished pics on Garamania now: http://garamania.blogspot.com/2011/03/kaiju-collector-and-customizer-troy.html Thanks for looking! |

nefasth wrote: This is mega awesome ![]() Ha... I thought so, too... hence the crazy plan I hatched to use the figure as the head of a huge, gnarly monster. His feet were going to be cut off, and long, narrow antelope-style horns were going to be placed sprouting out of his ankles; the head was going to be mounted on the upside-down torso of a big, old Fewture toy of the turtle demon Jinmen from Devilman. It was gonna be insane. Once Troy announced the KFJ thing, though, I knew the easiest way for me to get something in quickly would be to just finish this guy off. Maybe some time down the road, if I get another one of these figures, I'll do a big mutated custom with it as the head.... |
