A thread over in 'whatever' brought an interesting fellow named Bill to my attention. Bill's gotten a hold of an old novelty injection mold machine, the kind that would make you, say, Abe Lincoln's head out of plastic while you watch, and wants to start up production of these figures, a different one each week, for a mail-order club.
Here's a link to his blog:Moldville
A couple of us have started emailing him about the project, for updates and what not, and in his last letter he had a tech question he hoped I'd pass along to someone who might know.
Quote:
...I wonder if anyone in your group knows if there are alternative coloring methods for coloring polyethylene. For instance, is there a way to MARBLE coloring of low melt, low viscosity polyethylene?

I know I don't know, but I hoped maybe someone in the custom depot might have some kind of knowledge in this area.

Discuss!

Polyethylene being a thermoplastic, you would need a coloring agent that cures at or near the same temperature; something like a plastisol ink for instance.

That's a great start - thanks! Can anyone tip me to anything else? Process stuff or guides?

Add ink/paste to neutral color melted polyethylene pellets and bake.

Start at 1% by volume and increase until desired tint/color is reached.

*Note- the MAR machine has a pot inside that keeps the plastic hot, to which you can add your coloring.

You can find the original MAR patent info here>> http://www.google.com/patents/about?id= ... dq=3068518

I've worked with this company before and they are fantastic>> http://www.penncolor.com/
