i have no parade, but it's no big deal anyway. my appreciation of things certainly doesn't hinge on the approval of others :)

exactly
he is a good artist, it's just that his style doesn't lend itself well to kaiju

I have always liked docs work and he is an amazing artist. But I think what makes people dislike this is that its painted in a western way. Eastern toys look best when painted in the eastern loose style. Many artists that have learned to paint using western toys cant make the crossover because they are stuck in what they have learned and how they approach their work. And they approach all things in this manor. Usually western toys are bland and need the paint to make the toy.

The problem is being a eastern toy the paint is fighting the sculpt and making this look odd.

The paint is trying to make you see what he wants. He painted it like he was a canvas. Instead of letting the sculpt tell the story and letting the paint enhance the figure to give it a feel and vibe.

For eastern toys the sculpt is about 80 % of the whole package. Thats why so many eastern toys can be made unpainetd and still work. The paint is just enhances the sculpt to give it the feel you want.

Instead he is making the paint do all the work and missing the overall feel to the toy and that makes it look forced.

But if this is your thing and you love it than congrats :) thats all that matters.

Become one with the paint.
Allow your Western thoughts and ideas to fade into the background.
Summon your inner spirit and approach the toy with Eastern eyes.

Interesting to see his approach applied to J-vinyl but I personally don't like it, looks a bit of a clash? I can't really put my finger on it.. ah well, still cool to own some custom stuff :)

Okay - I cant hold my tongue any longer.

It looks like the paint took a left where the sculpt already went right. (pun intented). Im sure its big in western circles, but I cannot find one aspect of this fig to legitamently enjoy.

I cant totally hate this figure, The eyes/ mouth have a cool concept, just poor execution. And by the way, what is he bleeding? Robot Blood? Blue Oil? Antifreeze?

Scud, Im glad you enjoy it, sorry I cannot.

well.. IMO, it is a breath of fresh air to me. I don't mean most of the customs i see on this board aren't badass (because they are)... but there are only a couple of members that customize and they definately have a defined style. I like to see something out of left field sometimes and I think what he did worked for the most part (in fact, i think the vines on this actually worked)

keep in mind. i also think the best custom i have ever seen is nerd-one's pirate gargames

I hope this was originally a yellow blank and not a GID or S7 Damn.

Just makes me sad that cool toys, that look great on their own, are getting painted over by customizers.

Is it such a tragedy if the milky white or solid yellow damns are painted over? They do look great as is, but IMHO painting those isn't bad ... it's when the cool colorways get obliterated that it seems sad to me, but even then, I figure it's the owner's perogative.

I appreciate that the Dok is trying something different here. I agree with some of the criticisms but I still think this is a compelling custom and appreciate being able to see it. :-)
