Dream Rocket previewed its new sculpt this weekend at Superfestival: Kyumaras (Cumulus?).

According to kadomiumtank's blog (source of the image below), the concept is a chimera-type kaiju; the result of biotechnological experimentation. There is a definite resemblance to Kingmaimai from Return of Ultraman, or maybe Akurion Seijin from Silver Kamen Giant. The scorpion tail is a nice touch that sets it apart.

Thoughts? The sculpt seems a lot more serious than the other Monster File toys (Gazura, Gumoz, Balbagon, etc.) and I don't know if I like that. I'm trying to picture it with paint.

First release is supposed to be in February.

Also: this is the new Max Toy kaiju, Dorazora (?). Yajima-san of Dream Rocket is responsible for the prototype, which is probably why it looks a little different from the other Max Toy guys.

Both are very cool.
Lots of details and textures.
I like the MTC Dorazora.
Can't wait to see both of these painted.

I am liking Kyumaras even if he is rocking Dream Rocket's signature obnoxiously long tail. Dorazora could have something more going on.

What is with the standard sized Camguts?

I like them both but Kyumaras is just plain awesome!

both of these are stellar! can't wait to see some of Mark's paint apps on that dorazora,
but most of all i'm liking that kyumaras. the texture is amazing, it has a strong vintage feel to it.
lots of crazy mash-up style stuff going on here, between the scorpion tail, the fin, and what is up with those hands?! that might be the best part, so bizarre....

Was already wondering what that new sculpt was when checking KT's Superfestival report. Kyumaras looks promising... Cool combination of wings, claws and a scorpion tail.

I love everything about the Kyumaras. The face is what really wins it for me.

Not Camguts, but the other hero he does.. I think the characters name is Sunguts..
Anyway, it's a new sculpt called "Last Sunguts"

Whenever sunguts calls anything Last something I get freaked out that he is calling it quits. I'm sure he isn't, he's been doing lots lately it seems.

Diggin the Kyumaras for sure. I don't think it's too serious, it'll go very well next to a Gilmohs.

It's a superb sculpt. Lots of satisfying monster parts coming together in a way that looks just right. Harmonious, not disjointedly collage-like.

We KNOW that Dream Rocket will do some spectacular paints on this guy, hopefully some colorful translucent vinyl treatments too. Too serious? I dunno. I think "seriousness" varies in DR sculpts. I prefer the more serious side of the monster scale in DR-land.

Speaking of great DR paint jobs, I'm surprised that there hasn't been much talk about the DR paints of Sunguts' Aros Mucha sculpts. Those were really great in '08.

I love DR's stuff, and this sculpt is just amazing. The max toys sculpt is awesome too can't wait to see the final product, these are both going to be a must buy for me.

DR's paint app on sunguts aros mucha is killer, and they are really inexpensive..gonna try to pick these up soon

Found out the correct name for the Max Toy sculpt- "Drazoran."

I guess when I mean 'serious' sculpt, it's that this seems to lean more towards the realistic side in the spectrum of kaiju toys. On that side you have stuff like Marmit's Kaiju Tengoku line and CCP; on the other side you have Amapro and Bear Model. Yajima-san has always successfully balanced a detailed sculpt with sort of a playful self-awareness- e.g., the 'stoner' eyes on the green Gappo or the candy-cane spirals on the King and Queen Gazuras' tusks- such that the toys don't take themselves too seriously. A lot of vintage sculpts are like this.

The aesthetic does remind me of Gilmos, so I think it'll be good.

I really just want painted eyeballs on this guy.

Kyumaras set for a Sofubi Mania debut this weekend:

Mail-order version to follow in April.

Definitely an interesting sculpt- it incorporates the organic detail of Marnon into a more traditional kaiju toy.

One of DR's best sculpts to date, I think.

I love the little head wings.

Kick ass figure and paint app. I love the effect on the stomach/chest.
Must find one of these.

Totally agree on the stomach/chest 'effect'... looks like his guts are about to explode. One of the best new sculpts i've seen this year!

Nekrodave posted a bitchin' review of the Max Toy Club exclusive Drazoran on CDX.

The anecdote about Goto-san painting these was killer. Makes the toy seem more...robust.

Post subject:  Re: New Dream Rocket original- Kyumaras

There were 4 new Drazorans sold at Superfestival as well... all nice, dark colors.

It's funny that Nekrodave mentioned the rough (?) paint work. I had the same thought when I took Drazoran out of the bag- the paint is noticeably bolder in its application than with other new vinyls. A lot of the younger artists try to fade the paint completely when making transitions, but you can clearly see where Mr. Goto starts and stops airbrushing. The old vinyls are the same way.

EDIT: revised title for Drazoran coolness.

Three cheers for Mark!!!
This is what it should be! The creator can be from anywhere, but as long as they maintain the tradition of pulling the vinyl in Japan then its authenticity is retained. Just my opinion though.

Post subject:  Re: New Dream Rocket & Max Toy discussion

I believe in authenticity, but I don't necessarily believe that something has to be pulled in Japan. I think the soul of the artist comes through in his work. Sure, the "canvas" of Chinese vinyl may not be 100% up to par with its Japanese counterpart, I still think the Chinese stuff can be great...as long as someone like Mark is at the helm!

After all, I'll probably be able to find a Tripus or an Eyezon in Newbury Comics...I doubt I'll be able to score a Drazoran there! Remember, rarity/inaccessibily doesn't make a toy "great".

Anyway, can't wait to get me a Drazoran!
