:?: So, not sure if there's another board where this should go, but I am interested in finding a common reference site for the history of various designer toys and their current price ranges on Ebay, wherever. Is that a stupid thing to expect to find? Something like a database of what's what and how much.

I don't mind paying extra for something I really like, but I really hate that nagging feeling that I was taken again for a schmuck. Which I probably am, but that's not the point...

Don't expect this kind of Database around here.

First it depends on what you have in mind for "Designer Toys". If you're talking about HK designers, you will have to look somewhere else.

The history of many Japanese manufacturers have already largely been discussed here, you might want to do some search in the forum with the keywords you are interested in.

As for price ranges on eBay ! You'd rather acquire some experience and gather info on what you are looking for since eBay is the home of flippers and NOT the correct source for a value guide on anything.

Why do people always ask this question?
Or some variation there of?

This is not the place for it.

Maybe because they are too lazy to look in the archives.

But no guarantees.

Actually, it is very likely that someone will try to rip you a new one now and then no matter what you do.

pricing is easy nowadays... find out what the retail price is and don't pay over 35%

Of course this formula works for vintage Bullmark too.

I know I should've watched where I post, but too late now... So, would the proper board be 'Muton's Minute'?

It should also be pointed out that any prices you find in the archives aren't necessarily the going rate. It's really a day to day, week to week kind of thing. I have been amazed at the drop in price some lines have seen.

What wasn't obvious to me is what backtrack explained above. I didn't realize my avatar had that kind of prestige. Such is the level of my ignorance... but that must be obvious by now.

Just outta curiosity, how old are you?

I'm not asking to be a dick...I'm just trying to work this all out in my head.

Like, maybe it's an age thing. Seriously. I'm 31 and I never grew up with the internet (or computers at all, for that matter). I only really encountered this shit when I got to college. Anyway, I kinda see these fora ("forums"?) as a privilege, more so than a right.

For example, because I'm interested in Glyos figures, I discovered their forum hosted by October Toys. I registered and certainly have many questions to ask...but I wouldn't even once fucking DREAM of posting my Fresh Meat questions without having lurked there solidly for a good 6 months or so. I mean, I've been over at TBDX for fucking years, and only joined skullbrain in the last couple...but I did my research before first posting. I got to know names/personalities, what counts as proper board etiquette, even some of the inside/running jokes.

That just...I dunno...seems proper to me. Respectful.

Anything less would just seem disreputable to me. Disrespectful towards the established community. Reprehensible behavior.

Disreputable? Disrespectful? Reprehensible? (Sanjeev - you are kidding, right?) Why not add heretical, immoral, repugnant?

Come on, the guy has some questions about toys!

Some members of this board act like they are the high priests of a geeky select secret society (or like thugs in a gang) and seem to feel that they have somehow earned the right to act high, mighty, rude, mocking, dismissive, obnoxious, you name it. And often this bully-like behavior seems primarily intended just to get a yuck out of those similarly inclined. It serves no purpose except to make the mockers feel better about themselves and is an obvious sign of insecurity.

This is a toy board. Its purpose should be to share conversation and information between people who like toys, in a respectful manner. Asking a question about toys, even if the question is uninformed or naive, should not be viewed as disrespectful (you all had questions, dumb or otherwise, at some point). Openly mocking or trying to humiliate somebody for asking the question - that's disrespectful.

This doesn't mean people shouldn't share their honest, critical opinions. But the board should not be some kind of a bloody gauntlet that has to be run by folks trying to start, maintain, or add to a collection.

Wow, geo, wow.
I wish there was a hypocrite button on the board.
That would be a welcome addition in my opinion.

Welcome aboard KaosHead. Word to the wise, don't mention "current price or value" here. I once naively posted about it when I was bored and was read the riot act for days. People here think it directly leads to flippers price gouging hard to find pieces. While I'm inclined to disagree somewhat (flippers know what's rare and can just read the hype fest here any day of the week on any new toy), some people will really let you have it no matter how long you've been here.

If you're unsure of pricing, or want to buy something and think the price is way outta hand, it probably is. Dig around a little on the board using the search engine, find some people who have it and shoot them a nice PM about what is a fair price for it. People here are pretty nice and most of the time will help you out. Remember search engine is your best friend for awhile.
