This might be a STUPID and retarded post, but it's something that has been on my mind. So. Kaiju today. There is a lot of it. All different shapes and sizes, releases and colorways. But one that that hasn't really changed is the monsters... Rose Vampire = Keronia. Hoonoo = Kitty Flame Neo Gorilla = New take/evolution on Gorilla and Mecha-Gorilla. Galtan = Remix of Baltan Thrashman = Remix of Ultraman New Smogun = old Smogon Hedoran = Hedorah Bounty Hunter Kun = Frankenberry Copy Robot Little Softee = Mister Softee. And many more that pull similar attributes from past figures. Like the one arm that is a sharp, angular spike. And then you even got the color/paintjobs that seem to continue to live on on releases today: Tokyo (Yellow, Orange, Green) Hawaii Blue, red and white, Black, red and silver Tributes to old Godzilla paintjobs, anime shows/characters, and many others. King Walder colors Skulletor Tetsujin Garamon Then you got the many exceptions, like the releases from RxH, Secret Base and Gargamel, who just have new sculpts from original concepts. Or so I think... Here's what I'm "asking" or "wondering": Are most kaiju today tribute to kaiju of the past? Like a rebirth? Or are the similarities pure coincidence? Or just artist "inspired" and throwing back to? Or am I looking to deep into this? Or have I just been blinded and clueless on all of this? It's just something I wanted to be more clear and informed on, and hell, even point out other ones that I don't know about that I haven't listed (I had more, just can't think of them all). Post away. |

I think there's too much to post. So many kaiju and neo-kaiju and fight figures and art vinyl toys today (those are all different things BTW) are paying homage to many things. Some designs are tributes to 3 or more vintage/classic figures, and not always kaiju. RxH has a lot of TMNT, Star Wars and MOTU homages kind of flowing through as well as classic Japanese folk art, among other things. I think that's part of the allure to me. It's not just "Oh look, it's kind of like Frankenruge" but there's multiple levels of tribute going on to kind of make an original thing. Let's be honest, everything is ripping off everything else. Period. That's how we roll as humans. But the coolest stuff IMO is the stuff that does it well and in a way that's not just totally blunt. A way that might even take from 3-4 or more sources and make something fresh with that. I think it's too much to try to contain in 1 thread. Honestly you can hit every thread about each figure and comment on what influenced it, whether it's obvious or not, and then that's just the sculpt not the paint homages! |

Oh, that's cool, and totally understand ya. But I was just wondering if I'm not crazy for looking so deep, and it wasn't just all a coincidence. Or is it the whole POINT of kaiju today? But yeah, I'm with you on the "subtle" tributes. I love colorway tributes on other toys, and sculpts that remixes the old. But yeah, your right, I bet it'd be a whole other forum on it's own trying to trace everything and their ties to the other. |

I think you're obviously correct about neo kaiju being a sort of remix of kaiju and pop culture icons of the past. You could probably make the argument, however, that many of those things that neo kaiju references are also remixes of other cultural icons. I think that's just the way pop cultural creativity works. |
