Not a whole lot of information on Modern Toy out there. From what I can tell, they've been producing vinyl toys since the late '90s and still frequent the toy shows (Iluilu shared a booth with Modern Toy for his debut at Superfestival last year). Their toy catalog is pretty random: Giant Gamera, Paira Seijin, Ninja Hattori-kun, Robot Hack (from Capt. Ultra) and the roach advertising character.

Here's a couple of their Giant Gameras that I recently picked up.

This pink/blue version is painted on flesh color vinyl; I think the color scheme is similar to Bullmark's Earthtron.

Based on the foot sticker, this seems to be a test shot. As far as I know, the toy was never produced in this color.

Both include the red Tokyo Tower (the sample version was unpainted).

If anyone has more info on MT and their toys, please post here. I'm particularly curious to know if they're related to Masudaya, which also used the name "Modern Toy Masudaya."

14 inches. Around the same as Bullmark giant size.

That Gamera is beautiful. I love the pointy back.

The Giant Gamera is one of my all-time favs. That blue and pink version is stunning.

I don't know too much to add about the company, but there is also a vintage "Modern Toys" maker, which I believe is the Masudaya connection, and I am not sure if there is any connection to the new name at all [it could just be coincidence]. I have seen a few of their toys, mostly non-vinyl (diecasts), but I know they made kaiju figures for at least Spectreman. You can see the old style logo on the right of this header:

I have a painted blue giant Gamera, but I don't have a photo for some reason.

Love the very clean symmetry of this guy ... he's almost architectural.

A truly stunning toy.
I have the green and the light blue.

Mori owns a flesh with orange one that's pretty killer.
There was a glow as well.

Yes! The near-mechanical precision of the sculpting is what really makes this toy shine.

Glad this got posted, I'd never seen this sculpt before and it kicks ass. Great shade of blue, would love to see other versions.

Awesome looking Gameras.

Masudaya Corporation is the actual name of the company. Not Modern Toy Masudaya. Trade Mark/Modern Toy are just brand lines for Masudaya. The MT logo used by Masadaya doesn't actually stand for either Modern Toys or Trade Mark. It stands for merchandise/market and technology. As for Modern Toys that made that Gamera. Modern Toys is the actual name of the company. So it's 2 different companies. As for Modern Toys that made that Giant Gamera I have zero knowledge about the company, d'oh!

Ah, so Modern Toy was just a toy line under Masudaya. Makes sense. Thanks!

The Gamera is massive. I think I've seen an orange one once before.

I am always on the hunt for the Paira Seijins. They rarely show up.

Very nice!

Paul- Mori's orange version is painted on flesh color vinyl? (Not orange vinyl, like the one above.)

Okay, I know I'm the minority here. The machine like quality to the sculpt totally blows it for me. Still a good looking toy but more along the lines of what I would expect from a modern day license toys. Just too clean in the sculpt for me. It might even be magnified by it being Gamera, turtles are just not perfectly symmetrical. It's still awesome and looks good from a bit of a distance, just can't get into the sculpt myself though. Love the paint apps regardless.

These are so fucking rad! That flesh with blue is amazing. Must try to acquire one. Does any one have a shot of the glow version??

Post subject:  Re: Modern Toy: Giant Gamera, etc.

These are vinyls from the early 2000s. They made 4 colors back then (blue, green, orange and glow), and we have had the green one with cream spray at the store 6 or 7 times, as well as the light blue a few times. The figures came with a lighthouse not a tower. I an still looking for the glow version. As recently as a year ago, these figures were still inexpensive, but the last few have gone up. I am not sure where that earthtron or sample color came from. Maybe it is a custom paint?
