Well, at the request of Jim and Ed, I'm reposting this here despite it being a Super Robot/Jumbo Machinder joint. But, hey, can't deny two mods!

Been meaning to post this since New Year's. I've just been caught up...

Behold...my grail...acquired. The Jumbo Machinder Grendizer Spazer!!
Image

I posted about this last week on the TBDX Brog. If you're bored and have some time on your hands, check it out for the whole, harrowing story! You'll laugh. You'll cry. You might just throw up a little in your mouth. Here's the discussion on the TBDX board...in case ya wanna troll those jerks...

Image

Suffice it to say, it's been a damn good New Year for me! Getting this over here safely has been a huge load off my mind (as both Jim and Ed know well!), but just getting one of these is such a huge thing for me.

The topic of "completion" has come up before on TBDX. Like, at what point would you consider your collecting complete. What rare or meaningful piece has the power to dwarf everything else, and thus render your collecting at an end? Or what holes in the toy lines you collect need to be filled before you can say, "I'm done"?

Well, I don't think I'll necessarily stop collecting...at least, not at this point. There are a few vintage chogokin that I'd still love to get my hands on, for instance...and I'm sure there'll always be a glowie vinyl or two on the way to me in the mail. But I just can't see any other toy coming close to the personal impact of this one.

Besides, I'd like to start focusing my resources on more creative toy-related things... Anyway, I think "completion" is an interesting subject to think about...

Enjoy, guys!

Those are amazing pieces. I did not know there was the spazer for Grendizer...
I love Go Nagai's work and Grendizer is hugely popular in France.

You've got a marvel in your hand Sanjeev. And it seems in an incredible mint condition
How large is it overall ?

Be sure I'll check the topic on TBDX for the whole story !

Post subject:  Re: Jumbo Spazer...my pants just got tighter!

Thanks for the comments, guys! plasticXO, Grendizer, Getter Robo G, and Mazinger Z are big over here in New England because they were dubbed (horribly!) into English and broadcast during the early 80's. UFO Robo Grendizer was simplified as "Grandizer", and it was my favorite of Jim Terry's "Force Five" anthology. Heh...it's funny because I think Mazinger Z aired after the Force Five run (renamed "Tranzor Z"), and no mention was ever made of the connection between Mazinger and Grendizer. In fact, Kabuto Koji was named "Lance" in Grandizer and "Tommy" in Tranzor Z! :P

Anyway, if Rory's (fan-fucking-tastic!) pic wasn't a good enough indication, the Spazer is about 19 inches, front to back. The main saucer section is about 10 inches tall (including the wheels), and about 14 inches to the top of the vertical stabilizer. The wingspan is just shy of a yard! Yeah, it's a big motherfucker!

Kirkland, thanks so much, bro! This was a huge fucking thing for me and makes for a pretty cool story, but this definitely does NOT compare to Tom's Garada K7 or Mark's "reverse" Ultraman. I mean, there are only three confirmed Garadas and five confirmed Red Ultramen! :P Tom's and Mark's stories are fucking epic. I'm psyched as shit to have my grail, but just for the sake of perspective, there are lots of Spazers out there...Tom's got one. Obviously, Rory's got one (plus a pilot!). Granted, mine's in dope-shit condition!

jojo, don't worry, man...there's gonna be plenty more pics of this thing over the next several...decades! And lots of photoshopping madness, too!

I remember seeing this in the catalog that came with my Raideen in the 70's and going.."Ohh that's just for babies..."

Now I'm crying like one....

Awesome piece!

Wow - That is Ubercool!! And very big - I'd have to park that in my garage.
(And KR, that is one cute kid. So what are you going to do now that she thinks the Jumbo Spazer is her's?)

Post subject:  Re: Jumbo Spazer...my pants just got tighter!

Just about strange names, in France Grendizer is called "Goldorak", Kabuto Koji "Alcor" and Duke Fleed "Actarus"... They sound OK but don't have any link with the original names either.
Mazinger Z nerver aired in France. Grendizer was for a long time (from the 70's to the late 80's) the only japanese robot actually known over here...

And you can't imagine the list of silly french names given to japanese hero series in anime

Now in France (sorry if this kind of anecdote is of no interest to some) Grendizer is all about the hype of 30-40 year old people pretending they are still cool by having a toy displayed in their design living room

Hey, plasticXO, as long as Goldorak is still popular there, it's all good! And Robert, as long as you live down a hill, I'll be by to pick you up!

Jim, are you serious? I mean, I know boxed Spazers aren't easy to come by, but I assumed they were more common that the villains. I just figured the market value was based on the super-high demand...what with Grendizer being a popular hero robot and all...

Greasebat, I've already got hillsy on it! He spotted one of those amusement park ride Grendizers near his home. Blowtorch. Check. Wire cutters. Check...

Ralph, you are SOOOOO right, brother. This is how my living room looks right now:

Yeah, I hate to sound like a party pooper, but as great as this is, in no way does it compare to the Garada. (I don't know enough about the red Ultraman to speak to that at all..). I've probably seen at least a half dozen boxed Spazers over the years, which is still not a lot, but that's twice as many as there are loose Garadas. Furthermore, I've seen dozens of other loose Spazers. As Sanjeev said, it's the demand that makes this one so damn tough to get. But that shouldn't in any way decrease the happiness acquiring this one will bring you, Sanjeev...and I know it won't! Congrats again...

Jim, oh man, a GI Joe Defiant hit 5Gs?! Wow, I had no idea 80s Joe toys were fetching that much. I think the most I'd see before was 2Gs for a boxed USS Flagg, but on the other hand, I don't follow sales of that stuff either. Just for fun, here's my childhood Defiant.. Awesome toy..

Oh yeah, if you really wanna impress me, you'll get the "Goldrake" strength test carnival game seen in this W.A.S.P. video, from the movie "Ghoulies II", filmed in Italy. (Yeah, i can't post this video enough.. so cool.. )

i must defer to nekrodave in all things machinder, as he actually puts the work into watching and collecting jumbo auctions.
he has been at it for at least two years forming data for anyone who wants to look at the stats. sanjeev. did it come with any paper work
like instructions or catalog?

Thank the gods!

Anyway, yeah, Dave's the Man, so there's no question about it. Rare, for sure, but compared with some of the villains, demand is definitely the over-riding factor when it comes to this toy. Jim, yeah, it came with the full-color instruction sheet, but nothing else in terms of paperwork. I'm still putting together a full review (including a stupid amount of pics!) for CDX...

Actually, I could be wrong, but...I think there may actually be a box variation. No joke. I think the in-store and mail away versions may have slightly different boxes. My memory is hazy on it though... But just in case, you better start saving up again, Sanjeev! :)
