Yeah Chris, that's a broken permissions thing. I'll fix that when we go live. I'm mainly testing that the import went better than last time, which it looks like it did.

So it looks like I'm pretty much ready to go. Like I said previously, I'll need to shut the board down for about 12 to 24 hours to do the migration, and then we'll be up and running with the new software. I'll leave this board up in limited functionality for a while as a backup so people can grab their avatars or other content.

When do you guys want to make this happen? Should I start a poll for everyone to vote on a day / date?

Yeah weekends are good for sure, everything turns quiet around here for a bit. Maybe we'll do it this weekend.

Polls are fun, though.

This is true, but I think I'm going to start the changeover tomorrow evening, wrapping it up early Monday.

So should I email all my bookmarks to myself because those aren't going to carry over? Crap they proabably won't even if I do because they'll link back to the old site right? Have to say I don't like that people I follow come up as a partial list pop up where I have to constantly click 'more'. It was so much easier to see the whole list along side of my profile with no pop up. I hate pop up's and all things mobile related but that's just me.

Checked out the new site for the first time. So, is our avatar the only thing we need to deal with? And what are trophies? Can we trade them for decoder rings?

And do they make a sound when we achieve them?

Not sure about the follow list, I'll look into that. As far as links and bookmarks go though, I'll be implementing some back-end code that will automatically parse old links and take you to the appropriate thread.

Yep, avatars should be the only thing to worry about. You may need to set up new PM folders, that's something I'm still investigating.

I'm with you, Chris - about those issues, and several other points of 'modernization' on the new platform - but I think that just makes us old. :?

James - were you able to find an improved system for PM management for us? That's probably my biggest concern about the impending changes.

At one time, there was talk of adding a "LIKE" button feature to the new site.

I'm not sure what the final judgement was, or if it's too late even, but after joining Instagram recently I now see where having a like button could be a welcomed plus to the new sb. When we originally mulled it over, I was against it, having only been familiar with how the button was utilized on Facebook with ads chosen for you...

My argument : allowing users to like-button a post gives positive feedback in the simplest of forms, eliminating the "Cool!", "Nice!", "Hotdog!", etc., type of comments.

Just to chime in to have the other side of things represented, I am actually against the like button, and already not hugely attracted to any of the social media aspects the new site is incorporating. But I am fully ready to acknowledge that is because I am a fossil and general all-around grump. Nevertheless it stands, and someone has to represent the misanthrope vote.

I don't know how I am going to handle a day without Skullbrain. [for more information, see above (¬_¬) ]

I agree. I don't like the "like" button. It's unnecessary. Two minds about the followers and following. Meh.

Steve, I think that's the first time anyone here's referred to you as a grump.
Nate wrote:... Two minds about the followers and following. Meh.

Explain. Is that going to be a new feature - follow(ers)?

I think SB postings have been pretty clear as to whether something is 'liked' or not (usually the latter  ).
Please don't add generic features to the site just b/c of existing social media formats.

All's I care about is redeeming my collection of no-prizes. Sadly, their obsolescence has made them even less rated than their intrinsic value.

Haha, that's true. Well it doesn't matter anyway. The new sb "likes" feature isn't what I thought it was, or at least doesn't appear to be from this look into the future -

And Congratulations for being Notable Member # 15, Steve! Want a trophy?

Well I hopped on over there to give you 34 likes JP, but seems as all the board stuff is going to be reset by tonight with the transition, I think we will have to just postpone until the morrow. Never fear, we will all be on equal footing. (it has all just been rubbish and playing around to test it out up to this point) :P

The "Like" functionality is still TBD, but the other social media functionalities (following / tagging / notifications) will hopefully all encourage more conversations, and fewer hit-and-run style replies. If you see something in a thread that you think David will like, for example, you can type @toothaction into your reply, and it'll let him know in his notifications that he was mentioned in a reply, and he'll be inclined to go check it out.

I like the idea of a community of people who don't just say, "this is what I think," but also being able to say, "oh man, so-and-so would love this, I should let him know about it."

That's a fair enough assessment James, and I completely understand where you (and everyone) are coming from, wanting to see this feature. Just old dudes stuck in our ways is all. :P

Speaking of previous generations, I was wondering what is going to happen with the old site, i.e. will the address automatically redirect to the new one, or will the old domain just expire? I am thinking of 'legacy' members who might ever so rarely check in on this place, or people who are currently on hiatus from the board and might just miss the transition notice.
