Here are the top 30 "usual" places to visit, when you are in SF.
http://www.travelwelcome.com/on-vacatio ... ncisco.htm

No need to hire a tour guide or go with a tour group. The buses in SF are ok, but slow. That and the electric trains (BART system), will get you to these destinations. And a lot of them are within walking distance of each other (bring comfortable shoes). Take the usual travel precautions--don't carry too much cash, and stash them in a travel safe wallet/money belt type thing.

If you are interested in old ships, the SF Maritime Museum reopened last year, after a lengthy restoration:
http://www.maritime.org/index.htm

One of my favorite sights is the antique 1914 Herschell-Spillman Carousel at Golden Gate Park. It is one among only a few remaining historic carousels that was painstakingly restored. Be sure to call ahead to make sure it's open on the day you plan to visit. Sometimes they close it, for maintenance. Each animal is truly a work of art! The horses have tails with real horse hair! I used to beg my parents for endless rides when I was a wee thing :)

Personally dont use it, but do look into getting a Clipper Card. Supposedly good on most regional transit system.

If you can afford it, do a blimp ride: http://www.airshipventures.com/tours-sf.php. At $500 for the bay ride, I'd much rather spend it on vinyl, but just in case..
Use the ferries if time permits, but a dinner bay cruise will leave you with some lasting memories for sure.

Also, in case you're truely concerned about being singled out as a tourist and dont have a local to hang with you, pop into Old Navy or Target and get some local looking garb. Just so that you dont stand out too much. Forsake style for anonymity and all that..

Finally, here's a link to the city's neighborhoods: http://www.sfgate.com/neighborhoods/, make what you like of it. Some bits might actually be worth keeping in mind.

Have fun and Bienvenue a San Francisco!

The blimp ride seems to be awesome but as you said, at $500 for a one hour ride it's a bit too expensive. Just as you, I'd rather buy vinyl.

And the link of the neighborhoods will be very helpful for me.

Thank you very much KaosHead.

Have you checked Craigslist.org? That is a good resource for finding a roommate or people looking for a roommate. I will keep my ears peeled

I think you need to change your topic for more effective advertising! Try:

FREE!!! GOGA, BEMON, NAG NAG, or ANRAKU!!!

Just put me up for 3 months and you can fund your toy dreams! :P
Not a bad trade in my opinion--a room for 3 months in exchange for a grail toy!

Is this really necessary in San Francisco in 2011? I mean, I know there are still pockets of “trouble” in cities no matter how big or prominent they become, but still I haven’t felt the need to shove money in my sneakers since I was 12 years old in Brooklyn.

Yes, I still think so! Sadly, my Mom had her purse picked while riding the MUNI buses, more than once! (she's not allowed to ride public transport anymore--too elderly!). She even had a guy slash through her purse strap and steal her purse! I've also had a few incidents when someone "bumped" into me on a crowded street, and attempted to lift my purse. Thank goodness I have a PacSafe purse

http://www.pacsafe.com/www/index.php?_r ... status=New

Their bags have straps and body panels with slash-proof steel mesh
http://www.pacsafe.com/www/index.php?_r ... gory_id=29
*They make great gear bags for travel too

I don't carry that much cash, as it's easier to cancel a credit card if it's stolen. I don't know about you male types, but I definitely have problems with shady characters in and around the city. I need a big dog or a pet lion, but I doubt BART or MUNI would let me ride with a pet lion or tiger by my side

And possibly post this in the WANT section? Might want to check with a Mod to make sure this is ok (it's sort of toy related  )

You're right, I easily noticed that! It's even more obvious when you work in JapanTown!
