Post subject:  Getting started (my first toy)

Hey guys I am trying to start making my own resin toys, but I don't know exactly what kind of resin to buy or where to get it. I'm also not sure what other materials I may need. My family owns a company that makes dentures, so I have I a lot of resources, and a small amount of experience with these things. I plan to use some of their dental impression material to make the molds, unless you guys discourage that and have a better suggestion. I went to some art stores yesterday, but was too afraid to make a purchase that might not be the right thing for these toys.

I have a lot of unique ideas for making kaiju, I just need a little help from you guys to point me in the right directions!

Shane of Hints & Spices did an educational tour of Japan to learn the toy trade from some pros. His blog entries from his time spent at Sunguts Factory are my favorite and broadly cover the sculpting process.

The resin folks use varies, but with the resources available to you, you should be able to do a lot. For a first try Super Sculpy is probably a good clay to start with.

Awesome! I'll give this blog a thorough look over. Thanks for the tips. I am still in the process of choosing my resin. As far as I can find it looks like Japanese sofubi isn't available for someone in the US to purchase, but it would probably be out of my price range anyways. I have found this

I don't know if this is the right kind of resin. Also, it cures white, and I am more interested in something that will cure to a clear color.

Yeah the use of vinyl in many countries is highly regulated due to toxicity. Also sofubi production uses metal molds created by electroplating a wax mandrel of the sculpt.

I think that some creators mentioned their preferred resins in a thread here before.

Ok so I have made my first attempt at a toy. Not everything went perfectly, but this was for learning.

I used all dental material. the body is made out of the same material the "gum" part of dentures is made out of. I left the base of his body exposed is the mold, and it ended up making his base shrink so he sits lower than the clay sculpt. One of his antenna's fell off in the mold too. The one of the right is my painted clay sculpt and the left is the plastic one.

I am for sure going to need better materials to work with for the mold and resin.
