Did he really do anything THAT bad? I mean he had some jag-hole opinions, and published them, but was anyone really ever hurt by the guy? I mean if we wished this crap on ALL people who go around shouting out their loud mouthed opinions, regardless of popularity, well we'd damn a lot of people....especially round here. Not like I'm for the dude's BS, but it's not like he raped or killed anyone, right?

Anybody that claims to be a Christian and hates like Falwell deserves a little payback.

Precisely. Normally when someone passes I keep my mouth shut if I didn't care for them, at least for a couple of weeks, out of general respect. However this guy was one of the ugliest, most corrupt, lying hatemongers in my country's unfortunate history of crackpots and haters posing as spiritual leaders for financial and political profit. You don't have to kill someone to hurt people indirectly by virtue of influential endeavor. Good riddance to the fraud!

I'm no fan of Falwell but I find this in very bad taste.

he's gone, so no more pseudo-christianity-politicizing from that front. If there is a God, as he professed, then he'll have some 'splaining to do to the big man...

Yes, it is in poor taste, but in this case, I don't mind a temporary lapse of manners. The man lied about and intentionally demonized decent people, degraded the Christian message of love, pit American against American, and advocated "justifiable murder" of homosexuals. Pardon our poor taste, if you take my meaning. As I recall the story says even Jesus himself got so ticked off at the moneychangers in the temple that he lost his cool and behaved in a distasteful manner in a fit of passion. Perhaps you can forgive my sin of a momentary lapse of manners, considering the hatemongering of Falwell and his allies in the broader context of our increasingly divided society.

At the risk of contradicting myself, it probably is better not to get into political or religious discussions here.

Quote:
Two days after the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, during an appearance on Pat Robertson's television show, Falwell claimed that the attack was God's judgment on America's immorality.

"I really believe that the pagans and the abortionists and the feminists and the gays and the lesbians, who are actively trying to make that an alternative lifestyle, the ACLU, People for the American Way — all of them who try to secularize America — I point the finger in their face and say, 'You helped this happen.'"

Now that's bad taste.

homosexuals are brute beasts...part of a vile and satanic system that will be utterly annihilated, and there will be a celebration in heaven.

this ones not so nice either.

He was a piece of garbage.

I do not believe the homosexual community deserves minority status. One's misbehavior does not qualify him or her for minority status. Blacks, Hispanics, women, etc., are God-ordained minorities who do indeed deserve minority status.
-- Rev Jerry Falwell, USA Today Chat, quoted from The Religious Freedom Coalition, "The Two faces of Jerry Falwell"

If you're not a born-again Christian, you're a failure as a human being.
-- Rev Jerry Falwell

The idea that religion and politics don't mix was invented by the Devil to keep Christians from running their own country.

OK, fair enough, I'm still not dancing on anyones graves. I don't think the guy was cool, in the least, but I'll leave it at that. Hope that I didn't offend anyone. I'll be talking about toys from now on, it's healthier than this.

Not that I supported him but here is his quote from NPR news.

"I believe that homosexuality is moral perversion," Falwell told NPR in 1996. "I think it is a violation of the laws of nature, as well as the laws of God. I do not think that that gives me permission to be unkind or ungracious to a person who may be living a homosexual lifestyle.

He didn't want them killed. He just didn't agree with the lifestyle.

I don't know what to say about him good or bad.

Falwells trip died in 89 when they disbanded the whole moral majority deal. the guy was a social and political outcast for the last 20 years. Was he a hater and a liar? of course, but then again, everyone is.

I mean, unless he like fucked your sister or ripped of yopur feeble minded grandmother...theres no reason to curse a dead man.

it is sort of gross.

Falwell is only getting back what he put out ! He was a F---ING hate monger and in my opinion deserves no rest whatsoever !!! There was nothing MORAL about this FAKE Christian! He chose to leed his flock with corruption and lies, I see no reason for any respect.

Good Bye Jerry !

Oh yeah, he only tried to rebuke his statements after there were public outcries and he was put on the spot. Just like alot of other creeps who backtrack after they have been exposed ! I'm sure the spotlite will get very hot on the other side .
