I'm going to have to get myself in the right mood to watch this again. I camped about five hours to see this at an AFI screening hosted by Lynch. Totally worth it but oh boy was it exhausting. My brain was in overdrive trying to process and interpret what I was watching. Lynch gave a straight-as-an-arrow Q&A afterwards. Forgive a bit of paraphrasing: Some guy: "What does the color blue mean to you?" Lynch: "Blue is the third color on the color spectrum. It is preceded by indigo and violet." I bought a can of his coffee too. It's very very good. |

Yeah Lynch refuses to give the game away, to his credit. Even though I thought it was amazing and emotional the first time I saw it, I don't think I really "got" Mulholland Drive until about the third time. I get more out of that film each time. I can't wait to pick Inland Empire up tomorrow, but I'm not expecting to grok it right off the bat. So glad that Lynch cast Laura Dern again after all these years. She's so perfect for him. |

I remember there was a thread about IE when it first came out but it was actually just part of a dream jawkdna had after he missed a showing in Boston hosted by Lynch. Weird. |

So happy for the heads-up on this- have been looking forward to it for some time! So perfect that I should read of this today- I had a very disconcerting Lynchian dream last night- even featured a scene that was straight outta Naomi Watts' bungalow-bound breakdown in Mulholland....>shivers< |

There are lots of ways that dreams and dream-logic have been portrayed in movies, but I can think of no other that more accurately gets it right than Mulholland Drive. Love that movie. Weird how it's heartbreaking despite all the ... weirdness. And Naomi is so pretty. |

I'm about 3/4 of the way through the movie and hope to finish it tonight. Well now, Mr. Lynch gets to play 100% on his own terms this time! Although I'm finding the film confusing, frustrating, disturbing, and slightly scary, I'm lovin' it. The way that that the "woman in trouble" theme and her fractured ego are portrayed reminds me of films like Rosemary's Baby and A Woman Under the Influence in which women's vulnerabilities to men's domineering are explored in ways that the audience might miss on first viewing. Most amazing performance by Laura Dern, ever. Who knew she had such emotional range? The early scene between the "new neighbor" and Dern's character just blew me away. So well acted, so creepy, so totally Lynch. I don't think this film's rambling, confusing style will win Lynch any new fans, maybe I'm wrong. I read some of the reviews aggregated at Rotten Tomatoes and was disappointed to see that most of the negative reviews were dismissive in a really ignorant sort of way. Cinematic ADD or something. This film is definitely not for everyone (I wouldn't recommend it to people sensitive to issues around battered women for example) but a good film critic should at least make an effort to "work with" Lynch. It's not like he's just weird for weirdness' sake. He's still pushing boundries while showing the influence of directors he admires like Kubrick, Bergman, Wilder, etc. and retaining his own unique visual/aural vocabulary. Anyone notice that some of the "industrial" background noises from Eraserhead pop up in Inland Empire? Coolness. There is only one David Lynch movie. There is the illusion of many different David Lynch movies. |

My girlfriend is a film studies theorist and she fell asleep shortly after the musical number about an hour in. She is working on a paper that will not be favorable, she would never say so, but she pretty much hated the movie. I stayed awake through the long-haul, not my favorite Lynch film... Glad you guys enjoyed it though. |

Glad you guys enjoyed it though. That's kinda how I feel about Lynch a lot. Either I find it stunning and talk about it for days, or I find it so contrived and boring that 15 min. starts to feel liek days. maybe that's what he wants, I dunno. I still wanna check this out, I always go back in hopes that it'll be a stunning flcik rather than an "artsy" snooze fest. |

I am so super glad that this is coming out: http://www.dvdactive.com/news/releases/twin-peaks2.html i hated how they did the releases here (what like 7 years apart!) I never bought 1 because 2 wasn't released, then by the time season 2 came out, season 1 was out of print. I have the Season 1 VHS set in a log box. haha. |

Despite being a fan since seeing a midnight showing of Eraserhead in '78, I completely missed out on the Twin Peaks series and "Fire Walk With Me." I didn't care much for Wild at Heart despite knowing an actor in it (G.E. Freeman, who played "Santos.") I don't know anyone who likes all Lynch equally. "The Elephant Man" seems to be the film that the largest number of people think highly of. I have a friend who hates "Blue Velvet" because he says it "degrades women." Hm, I think that's a misunderstanding but to each their own. Gotta get those Twin Peaks DVDs! |

I still have the complete series on VHS and it's the only tapes I still own...the only vcr I have is stashed in a closet, and I only whip it out once a year to watch this. |

This will be the first legitimate DVD release of the pilot episode which is missing from both of the box sets which will be redundant once the new set comes out. Oh well, I'm well accustomed to shelf-clutter by now. A few years ago the mighty Alamo Drafthouse in Austin screened a Twin Peaks Marathon that included all the episodes plus the pilot. About 28 hours all put together. I soldiered through all of it bolstered by free coffee and pie. The sleep dep really took it's toll during the James runs away/Billy Zane flies to town streak of episodes but the last run of episodes with Windam Earl was even better than when I watched it the first couple of times. |

Well I finished Inland Empire and am still reeling LOL. Really blown away by Dern's performance. I loved the movie but can see why it's not for everyone. I am still not sure how the rabbit sitcom people fit into the puzzle but I figure I'll get it on second or third viewing. I told my buddy who has a movie theater in his home that we should do a Lynch retrospective during the coming months. He said "great, let me know when you're ready for 'Dune'" heh heh. Oh well even that one has its "this isn't really working" sort of charm. |
